you can ingest tapeworm eggs for hundreds of sources infestations of these proportions are beyond rare. Even in Japan the leading consumer of all raw fish diphyllobothrium infestations are very uncommon. It's also something that's pretty easy to check for.

fake image.

tapeworms are intestinal parasites.

they live there and occasionally a segment breaks off from them that goes out with the feces, and then hopes it gets eaten by something so it can start the cycle again.

Pork tapeworm can enter other parts of the body, notable the brain if it is ingested in the "wrong" part of it's lifecycle: Where it's expected to be eaten by pigs and travel intot he pigs tissues. So you either have to eat human shit or eat food that has been prepared with filthy poo hands, but it can happen.

It doesn't surprise me that this happened in China.

This would happen much less often in North America, where they actually have food safety standards.

In fact, where I live, it's illegal to serve sushi unless it's pre-frozen. Not even kidding. Restaurants have to order their fish frozen, then thaw it out in time for service.

True free market, no regulation, only competition and reputation.

In order for that to work, someone will need to take the fall first to "test the water". Be glad you pay taxes and the tax money goes to FDA and similar government run organizations.

Taenia is not aquatic

Probably a mistranslation? He might've ate more than just raw fish.

>> No.5828175

>>5828055
>>5828153
Furthermore, only the intermediate host gets encysted, which only happens if the intermediate host ingest eggs.

Adult larvae of the Taenia genus does not burrow into tissues they only stay in the intestine, mate, lay eggs, and you poop them out.

My parasitology a bit rusty

>> No.5828195

>>5828153
>>5828175

Further, furthermore, since this guy's from Southern China. It is more likely that his Taenia infection comes from fecal matter contamination through dogs or cats rather than raw fish (which is not a host to the parasite so it's an impossible path of infection).

The only way I'm guessing fish can somehow carry the eggs of the parasite is if the fish's freshwater and there's agriculture fields nearby that uses human or animal fecal matter as organic fertilizers ( LOL to anyone that swears by 'organic' anything). And the fecal matters are washed into the fish ponds and the guy's unlucky enough to get a fish that somehow has the eggs attached to it's skin or somewhere outside.

Are the parasites inside the fish when it's alive or does it contaminate the fish when people handle it?

>> No.5828237

>>5828224
Definitely, like i mentioned before. It is most likely from fecal matter contamination.

It is very likely that the chef that handled the fish either is infected himself eating raw pork or cow. Or that the kitchen is unclean and has cat/dogs/rats running around that spread their fecal matters around.

adding something

Only the intermediate stage of the parasite forms cysts in host tissue, and you can only get them through ingesting the eggs.

Eggs are only in feces.

So I don't think it's the fish's fault.

Fish has nematode parasites, their infection into tissues is far more damaging.

For tapeworms, once the cyst is formed it stays pretty much dormant till, forever.

But nematodes they dig around, they taste, they eat, they mate, and they travel. You can even feel them moving inside of you and you can feel the pain when they starts digging through your flesh.

You also have to account for the fact that the tapeworm found in fish is the egg of Diphyllobotrium Latum. The larvae will settle in the intestine when eaten, but eggs squeeze through pores in the intestinal epithelium.
Intredasting:
Cysticercosis was the diagnosis in the House pilot.
A girl with Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis was diagnosed with Diphyllobortium Latum by House in season 3. (It's called just a tapeworm, but only Diphyllobotrium Latum reaches such extreme lengths and causes B12 deficiency.
