By the same token, there is nothing necessarily pretentious about buying more expensive wine. What's pretentious is thinking that buying expensive wine is "better," makes you "better," or that expensive wine is necessarily "better." It's a real good treat to splurge on wine sometimes, but for your regular wine, there's no reason to spend much more than that.

I'm from Canada though. The cheapest bottle might be 9$. Still, I agree with you. No point in spending more on a regular basis, wine in that price range can be delicious, you just have to buy the right stuff.

>> No.5824353

>>5823965
Thing is if you ask 100 people they will all say their price window is "sensible" and if you spend more it's a scam.

Must actually knowledgeable people will say that basic passable quality starts around the $10 mark, but stylistically interesting wines get easier to find past $25.

Cheaper stuff has all the uniqueness stamped out to cover up grapes of unpredictable quality. That and it's cheaper to dump chemicals into a vat and kill off all the unknowns, than to use a more hands off approach that makes for more interesting flavors, but is more risky.

I tend to buy from less popular regions, Argentina, New Zealand, Spain, Chile

From there, you can get some quality stuff for under 10. As a numeric answer, $6-$15; if I have someone who appreciates wine, I dont mind dropping $20-$25, but not really more than that

Also, fuck women who say they love wine and later reveal this means moscato and sweet prosecco, and practically gag at the too-bitter Syrah/Cab Franc blend I picked up

If I'm buying a single bottle to try out, I'm happiest if I find one for $10-$20 that I like or think has potential and could use more time, then I'll get a case and hold, trying from time to time.

Burgundy drinker here, this exactly described my experience. At $10-$15 I can find decent drinks that aren't very interesting (various Bourgogne Blanc and Macon). Though with Burgundy, the more interesting stuff starts at $35 or so because many village level burgs start around that price range. Same goes for German Riesling. At $10-15, I can only find generic stuff from decent producers. At $20+, I can buy basic level (kabinett) stuff from very good producers (JJ Prum, Selbach-Oster, Dr. F. Weins-Prum, Donnhoff, etc) made from a single top tier vineyard. The main difference between the regionals/generics is producer style, but with the single vineyard stuff, you can compare producers AND locations. The thing that baffles me about /ck/ wine threads is that everyone will talk about a certain price range as if it applied to every type of wine in all markets, when in fact $10-15 means far different wines depending on where you live.

I've gone to some nice little wineries in CA that put out wine I'd like to drink, if I could afford $50 bottles every day.

I have not tasted many at the $10-15 window that I'd take over the examples I gave. I much prefer the French, Spanish, and Italian wines I get at that price point.

Perhaps it's an availably issue, like with Australia (that's a country, for anyone trying to follow this overwhelming whirlwind of obscure geography facts). Aussies don't get butthurt that we can't get their good, reasonably priced stuff. They just laugh when I talk shit. You should follow their example.

Tell you what. I need a bottle for tonight. Post a few $15 bottles that you recommend. No boozy fruit bombs. I promise I will try to obtain one at my local shop and report back.

£7.50-£12.50, about $10-$20, or at leasts that's how much I pay for a supermarket bottles I'll drink most of the time. Aged 20 and on virtually no income I know little about wine, however sadly my rich parents educated me too well and I find most extremely cheap wine unpalatable. I have a growing collection of finer wines, mostly collected while travelling in Europe.

Personally, I'd prefer to keep that to myself than help you find something more to your liking, since you can browse at least 30 large sites dedicated to cheap wines and find a vast amount of suggestions. I'd much prefer to let you know that you're missing out due to ignorance and leave it at that. But hey, enjoy those other wines, even if you can't not come to terrible conclusions on limited understanding.

Lol

You caught me in a rare moment of open mindedness. The regret was already setting in when I hit refresh.

I found a neat looking wild yeast fermented aglianico, in any case. Thank god I don't have to make the "California wine face" tonight for science.

I have given it a chance. It's kind of like McDonald's. Every few years some irrational voice inside of me says "how can it be that bad, look how popular it is"

So I have my open minded day to recalibrate. Oh yeah. That's why I never get this stuff. What was I thinking, that it would change?

Stay mad, friend.

Do you fellas recommend wine chilled or at room temperature?
I have some cheap red called Once Upon A Vine.

Going to be laying into it later. Normally I drink wine chilled i have the chance, but I'm honestly not too picky. I usually drink it chilled because it's been fucking hot out.

just a tangent.

About 36 dollaridoos from memory is the most I've spent.
I'm spoiled, living in a wine region when I'm not at uni, and with family in the industry I get a lot of good wine for nothing.

What's a good chianti for a noob? Hemmingway talked that shit up so much in A Farewell to Arms that I gotta buy a bottle. But I don't want to buy crap and get turned off.

8-12 dollars for personal bottles for getting drunk.

It has to be more than that for good stuff in my opinion, but honestly I have had legitimately good wine that didn't even cost $15 bucks just a couple times.

I live in Berlin, so I don´t usually have to pay too much extra for old world wines, which is really all I usually drink. I found that between 8 at a min and around 14, 16€ max you get tend to get the best value for your money. 95% of cheaper wines lack the complexetiy, and most wines above that aren´t not necessarily better than the 13€ bottle. Except for some speciality stuff like Amarone.

Actually reading the wine label helps with finding better wine in the cheaper range, it probably helps throughout most of the price range but I rarely go over $30 for a bottle of wine so I don't have much experience with more expensive wines.

Also if you're an alcoholic and also like wine, a good trick is to buy one decent to good quality bottle, and back it up with a box to carry you through your drunk.

I also buy Monsanto actually somewhat more often than the Ruffino but Riserva Ducale is pretty much babby's first Chianti (in a good way) and I highly recommend making that your first bottle.

If you like it and want to try something else, try this at some point. It's a little cheaper and it's literally identical to selective breeding.
