Sounds like you had a lapse in logic. It happens to everyone.
When I was a kid I put poptarts in the microwave inside the metal package because I figured I wouldn't need a plate then. At least I can say I've seen microwave lightning.

Ever put a CD in one? I put a CD on top of a mug and nuked it. It made a pretty cool looking "ornament".

My microwave must be fallout proof because that thing's from the 80's and it still kicks lol

The ones from the 1980s have far larger electronics with much better stress tolerances and longevity. The transformer alone is as big as a baby's head. The newer ones are about the size of an average person's fist. they make great transformers for making various types of arc welders and spot welders.

yea but when they go its fucking insane

>had ancient giant microwave for years
>one day hear loud ass electrical buzzing noise
>kitchen fills with death smelling smoke
>unplug microwave as quick as possible
>probably going to get cancer now

microwave blew up the magnatron

The insulation on the electrical wires from the secondary coil to either the capacitor or magnetron probably got old, brittle, and cracked. Since it is around 2,000 volts or more it will arc to the nearest grounded or neutral thing it can find within an inch of reach. It looks like the stuff you see shooting off a Tesla coil only much smaller. It's really loud too.

The nasty smells are really bad for your health. It is both ozone and whatever it was frying. Doubly bad if it was PCB components frying which have all sorts of heavy metals. There's also a small, usually pink colored, ceramic ring on the magnetron. It has beryllium oxide in it. If that gets crushed or cracked and you inhale the dust (or eat it) yes it can give you cancer. No joke. The capacitor can also hold a charge if the bleeder resistor is faulty and it can kill you (fibrillate your heart) if it shocks you and the conditions are right.

When I was a kid we had one of those analog metal kitchen thermometers. I wanted to see how hot it could read, so I stuck it in the microwave. Pulled it out after I saw sparks for a few seconds. My sister told my mom, and I was so scared I would get in trouble right before christmas that I stayed in my room for 24 hours.

Were you tripping balls or something?

Just pick off as much foam as you can, then heat the oven up again. Use pot holders and paper towels to scrape the rest off.
Pick those cheese balls up, put them in a pan or something, and finish heating them up, assuming they don't have melted foam or some shit all over them. Should be fine.
