Restaurant Owner Won’t Apologize For Shaming LeSean McCoy Over $.20 Tip

You may have already heard that Eagles RB LeSean McCoy stiffed a server at Philly eatery PYT — home of stunt foods like the Fried Chicken & Beer Burger, the Deep-Fried Twinkie Burger, and the Lasagna-Bun Burger — by leaving only $.20 on a $61.56 bill.

Well, in a letter posted this afternoon on the PYT Facebook page, that owner says he’d like to apologize to the record-breaking running back… but he just can’t.
First off, the owner clarifies that the waiter in this incident had nothing to do with posting the receipt on Facebook.
“I take total and complete responsibility for sharing this receipt,” he writes. “It was not our server’s decision, it was mine. I am to blame.

However, he claims that McCoy and his friends quickly became “verbally abusive” to the staff, including derogatory comments about females.
The owner also says that after the group had left, he noticed the waiter was staring at the receipt left behind.
“I took the receipt out of his hand and I couldn’t believe that anyone could be so callous,” he writes. “Mr. McCoy had left a .03% tip for our staff… Twenty cents that our server has to split with the food runner and the bartender. Two dimes from an insulting multimillionaire.”

Giving McCoy the benefit of a doubt, the owner says he assumes that the football star is “usually an awesome dude” and maybe he was having a bad day. But he takes issues with claims from the player and his management that it was in response to bad service — a claim the owner labels as “a complete slanderous lie.”
“At the end of the day, I did what I felt my heart told me to do,” he explains. “And I don’t want anything from Mr McCoy, but…maybe an apology to his server who gave him excellent service would be cool.”

The thing is is that wait staff are not really salaried employees. Their paid from their tips and if they're not tipped then their not paid. So americans are extremely reluctant about stiffing them (even when they deserve it) because of the guilt involved.

That's a social economic issue, and should be fixed at the source (higher minimum wage) rather than letting tipping continue. Tipping isn't helping anyone, it's especially not helping the very waiters and servers you're supposing it'll help by tipping.

Right. Well it's a mixed bag. I believe waitressing is the only occupation that uneducated/unskilled single mothers can do that pays them a living salary. I'm sympathetic to women in those service jobs for that very reason. I can show up and set up lunch for 100 people and some of them will tip me like I simply showed up with two pizzas on a saturday night.

It is. Tipping is frowned upon in asian cultures. It's actually insulting towards the server and the establishment, like they're a charity case in the ghetto somewhere. Tipping shouldn't be something used so people working at an establishment do you favors, it shouldn't be something you think you can control a server with, it shouldn't be some bullshit you use to show off to people you dine with. Whatever the tip, I think it's ultradouchey that businesses are allowed to publish people's credit card slips/receipts. Credit card transactions should be considered private information.

I wish Visa & Mastercard would just lay down privacy rules saying their merchant have to keep such data private. Or even pass a law, though that gets into all sorts of first amendment issues, and would lead to gray areas of publishing other types of signed contracts.

I went to visit my brother in Korea and all the restaurants there are IMO perfect. No tipping they work hourly, you get your own water and if you need more food or something taken away or another beer you press a button and the servers come to your table. Basically they all sit in the back and wait to be called.
