5749095 No.5749095[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

>Starting in his early 20s, Righini dedicated himself to vegan and raw food diets, thinking they offered a healthy way to recover from years of anorexia and bulimia. But he took those restrictive diets to extremes, agonizing, for example, over fruits and vegetables losing their "life force" each minute after being picked.

>He now says his "twisted thinking" was a symptom of orthorexia, an eating disorder that is increasingly on the radar of health professionals.

>Righini didn't obsess over calorie counts, as he did with anorexia. He pored over ingredient labels -- then rejected food with labels as being too "impure." He found it impossible to eat out at restaurants or other people's homes or to be around people eating fast food. He even tossed out food his mother brought home from a supermarket.

interesting, i'm bulimic and recently have been making an effort to eat and keep food down outside of binge sessions (historically i've only eaten during binge purge sessions), and i've been kind of neurotic about only eating whole non-processed foods if i'm not puking. it should have occurred to me that this way of thinking was a branch of the whole eating disorder and not a mentally healthy alternative mindset... hm. now it seems almost too obvious. that fixation on purifying one's self is pervasive in orthorexia, anorexia, and bulimia.

Crazy is crazy, OP.
No matter how you classify this dude in offcial diagnosising psychological terms. It's an exercise of semantics.

Fact: Anorexia's origins are in mental health disorders, not lack of education, misinformation about foods, superstitions, or any of the descriptors in your article.
Fact: Most people with one mental disorder have two or three at once. Having just one solitary thing wrong with you is rare, not the norm. The mean, the average, and the majority of people with any mental health diagnosis have several at once.

It is said that all anorexics want control over something, anything. The obsessive behaviors, lack of apetite, the flawed thinking and other things in common? This is secondarily the issue. Having control over others and over your own body is paramount. Who has lack of control? People who have been violated by family, or in a trapped situation of dependence upon them.

Part of the problem with fad diets, is that they require some food obsession what with all the plan rules and requirements, exclusions, special this or that, and therefore never allow a person to focus on other things in their life with balance. They fail when no one can keep up that level of daily thought because they aren't crazy mofos. People that adore fad diets are trading one disorder for a different one. Underlying all that? Crazy.

Why not?

But the bigger thing this story shows is that many "good" ideas become ridiculous when carried to extremes. Another example would be the "meat is a good source of protein" thing, which turns you into a hambeast when you overindulge. This guy did just the opposite, and ended up the opposite of a hambeast - a skinny little deformed stick of a man.

But if one leaned toward his premise - that much of the food out there in our affluent industrialized culture is worthy of suspicion - without carrying it to extremes it's reasonable to believe one could derive some health benefit. Most people in affluent nations would benefit from eating less animal products, and more plant based meals. This can be done without becoming a complete control freak about it.

You don't have to help your ugly along, you know. Being ugly already is no excuse for willingly deforming yourself.
This weird-looking hobbit/chipmunk cross-breed made his ugly even uglier. And he did it by choice.
I know this one dude that's deformed. Ugly as sin. Like the stuff of nightmares. He had a weird crevice in the middle of his already enormous forehead that looked like a buttcrack. He also had a permanent case of ducklips. We called him 'Magmar.' No one would say how hideous he is if he was pleasant, beeteedubs, but he's just not.

Anyway, Magmar won the lottery. He got plastic surgery with the money. Rather than either fixing his ugly, he chose to elevate it. He got horns surgically implanted to his head and had his teeth filed to be jagged. He went to some other country to do the tooth thing cuz no one else would do it.
Why would you do that? I could understand "love me for me" and not getting plastic surgery in the first place, but to make a bad situation worse? He poured hideouspetrol on an uglyfire.

Because we're normal, and if you look at >>5749410, it's abundantly clear that his ugliness is completely self-inflicted due to his mental illness.
It is normal behavior and completely natural for regular people to shun the mentally ill, retarded and ugly. That is why every culture throughout all of time has done so as a general rule, and why it persists as strong as ever despite all of the social training to the contrary.
Some defect in their genes displays in their appearance or behavior to mark them as unfit. And since humans are drawn to beauty and sociality, the whole process can be described simply as nature self-selecting for genetic fitness so as to keep the human race strong and healthy.

Nope.
In Italy, we're fucking batshit about genealogy to the point where we keep a registry of all 'proper' Italian surnames.

Iceland does the same with Icelandic given names rather than surnames since surnames do not really exist in Icelandic culture. They just append "son" and "dóttir" to their mother or father's given name for surnames. Have you any idea how many Thor Magnussons and Magnus Thorssons I met in Iceland?
It's illegal (or maybe not anymore... but it was illegal in 2005 when I was in Iceland) to give a child born in Iceland to Icelandic parents any name that's not on the approved registry of Icelandic names.

you understand the clockwork of mental illness, specifically anorexia here, quite well. yet you insist that underneath the perversion of normal development into disorder lies nothing more than a derogatory "Crazy." i'm sure you're aware that there are therapeutic methods and facilities in place to help remedy the psychological "scripts" of these sufferers (yes, they are sufferers, normal humans with illness on their shoulders, motivating "Crazy" thoughts and behaviors), untangle the glitches in development and send them on their merry ways. yes, i make it sound much simpler than it actually is. but Craziness is not label that accurately describes an internal permanent state. it is not the cornerstone of their existence. they are normal people who CAN be helped.
