So I'm not a vegetarian, but I've decided I want to experiment with tofu a bit. Today I made a potato and tofu curry that was pretty good. What are your favorite uses for tofu?

Are you also going to experiment with homosexuality?
Perhaps buy a Mac?

The main things I use it in are curry, mapo tofu and miso soup.

I like the texture better when it is deep fried. Otherwise I like it in small chunks in a really tasty salad or soup.

Stir fried with veggies.

I find it really compliments eggplant well.

Tofu is gross man, if you didn't grow up eating it you will not like it.

Look into Milk Proteins as a meat substitute, that's tasty in lots of curry. I even use it in buttered chicken (The india buttered chicken, not the "G'day ol chap pip pip cheerio" recipe)

Op, I went through a strong tofu phase a bit ago, give this a try: http://www.food.com/recipe/the-best-pan-fried-tofu-271647

Crisp, pan-fried tofu with a bit of oil and salt is delicious. I just ate it plain it was so good. If you can find something similar, I recommend using a ginger sesame salt.

Which is the same problem you'll have with the tofu, so you'll end up seasoning them both anyways.

It's pretty flavour-neutral and takes on other flavours really nicely. Texture is closer to an over-cooked egg-white than meat, I guess, but otherwise I'm not really sure how it is that people find tofu offensive to the palate. You should give it another go.

I didn't grow up eating it and I eat fuckloads of meat but I love tofu if it's prepared well

It tastes like nothing, it's just a sponge for whatever you put it in

mapo tofu is probably my favorite use for it, but I'll also make lettuce wraps and crumble some marinaded, baked tofu in with whatever meat I use to spread out the filling more (since I can get a cube at my local asian market for less than $1)

Maybe I just cook it wrong.

I have 12 pounds of soybeans, I go through about 8 pounds a month from making soy milk, and I use the Okara for my own recipe fr Okara Pancakes (Basically a potato pancake, but with okara replacing the potato, sometimes I'll add sweet corn and kidney beans too).

the only time I've liked tofu was when I made my own, it was a lot softer and nuttier than store bought stuff and I spread it on french bread wit some salt and pepper, it was delicious

But other than that haven't had much tasty tofu

I've never liked it when I've made soy milk, I do like making tofu though. I do like store bought silken tofu typically, but if you do enough stuff with the other stuff (whatever it's called, the refrigerated tofu) you can make it fine.

Well it sounds like you aren't using particularly firm tofu. Remember the different consistencies have wildly varying uses.

If you aren't sure of what you like maybe try going to an Asian restaurant and see what they do with theirs.

I've used the "Ultra firm" they sell in the stores, it was ok, fried it and ate it with Terriyaka sauce, wasn't too bad, I'll have to see how they prepare it in asian restaurants I guess.

There's a few ways I usually use tofu:
(these are all for extra firm tofu)
>marinate in a mix of soy sauce, chili paste, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and mirin overnight; use on salads (or just eat it out of the bowl, because it's tasty as fuck)
>cut horizontally into 4 large slices, marinate in either teriyaki, or worcestershire based sauce, or some other marinade overnight, and then grill. Delicious, on sandwiches, wraps, salads, stir fry, etc.
>mash half and half with eggs to make egg salad (I've used just tofu with no egg at all, but it's not creamy enough IMO), but it mimics eggs in egg salad amazingly well, you wouldn't believe.
>Make tofu "ricotta" and use as you would for regular ricotta in lasagna or other dishes

These are for soft or silken tofu: (I'm allergic to dairy, so I have had to get creative for some things)
>add to smoothies to thicken and add protein
>make key lime (or other flavored) "cheesecake"
>make creamy salad dressings
>make tofu chocolate pie

>>5739200

when I get the refrigerated shit packed in water I either marinade and bake it before using it, or put a bunch of paper towels on it and something heavy, and sometimes will partially freeze it after that (seems to make the texture nicer) prior to cooking

You're fucking kidding, right? I never ate tofu growing up, and I like it just fine. And I'm not even vegetarian, I'm a full blown omnivore who grew up on a ranch, with actual cowboys and shit, and even I like tofu. We NEVER ate it growing up. I think the first time I had it was when I was in college, at an asian restaurant. Tofu can be very good, it takes on the flavor of whatever it's cooked/marinated/baked with, so it can taste like any number of things.

Try twice frying it in canola alternating soy sauce and nutritional yeast, grit-style tofu: http://yourveganneighbor.com/tag/grit-style-tofu/

>> No.5739425

Mix it with ground beef and a spicy sauce of your choice. Fucking delicious.

Cook the beef normally, cube the tofu (don't just mash it in, let it keep its texture), mix in the sauce. Eat it with some rice if you want a base.

People use it as a substitute, I use tofu to compliment more meat. Mmm.

Yep, this is the way to do it.
Properly seasoned, tofu goes wonderfully with beef, pork, chicken, lamb, ect.

I've used it for lots of things, even using soft tofu for thick homemade protein shakes. I saw a recipe once for dipping slices in a seasoned egg batter and pan-frying.

You need to roast it first. Roasted eggplant is heavenly. There's nothing quite like a good dish of baba ghanoush or baingan bharta.

>>5738955
This. Vegetarians don't know how to use tofu. Which is why they've largely abandoned it (also that crazy "soy is evil" fad). Look what Asians do. Tofu is made to be enjoyed for its texture. It is made to go with other proteins, like meat. Tofu wants to be with meat.

I've been watching a marathon of Good Eats and this recipe interested me.
Tofu is an emulsifier so it can be used instead of raw egg.
