I'm actually dumbfounded by this

After a bit of investigation and anonymous interviewing

I've come to a conclusion.

A good portion of people see peanut butter as sweet, and a good portion see it as more of a savory, nutty taste

But surprisingly enough, an even greater margin of people have trouble accurately pinpointing the taste

Not sweet, not savory or salty so to speak, more a sort of indescribable, unique taste.

Although, above all else, most if not all people agree that peanut butter is, in fact, excellent-tasting, which leads people to favor it without actualy discussing it.

One person may say, "i sure love peanut butter", enjoying it because of it's sweet flavor, and another person says "i agree with you, i love peanut butter too" because he enjoys the savory taste

The actual flavor of peanut butter is an anomaly, an uncomprehendable sensation

The agreement that it is, without a doubt, good-tasting, but if one were to discuss the flavor, the discussion would be fruitless, because nobody can truly agree on it.

Thoughts /ck/?

I never would have really considered PB as particularly sweet, especially considering it's usually paired with jelly which is sweeter. PB is about as sweet as much as chocolate is, which is pretty well rounded between savory and sweet also. Just accept it's medium everything.

The only people I've seen that have said peanut butter is sweet have been asians. My wife's extended family (Korean) have said that they don't like peanut butter and think it's almost too sweet when I've asked them before.

Never heard it from anyone else I can think of.

It's just a fairly neutral flavor of peanuts that tends to have added sweeteners and salt (and other shit with bottom of the barrel). Tastes similar to other a few other nuts, and toasted grains. You can say the same thing for most produce. The tastes are unique and really only similar to related things.

OK let me break this down for you /ck/.

when people talk about sweet and savory they are talking about the taste receptors of their tongues which respond the most to those flavors.

There are two receptors at work when it comes to sweet and savory flavors anons... and those are the sweet receptors (obviously) and the salt receptors... savory actually starts at HALF sweet and half salt to full salt flavor.

NOW

knowing that.. a peanut generally has more than 4 times sodium per nut than sugar.

so for arguments sake that is:

minimum 4 salts

to

maximum 1 sugar

but in order for something to be considered sweet and not savory it would have to AT LEAST be

=1 salt

to

>1 sugar

and so ladies and gentlement... Peanut butter is inherently savory until you jam it full of bullshit that keeps it the same consistancy.. sweeten it for the Americans with sugar which also provides longer shelf life and put fake flavors and colours in it.

Fuck you corporate world! PB is just mushed peanuts!!!

I make my own peanut butter. I don't put salt or sugar in it. It tastes like roasted peanuts.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/savory

>having a pleasant taste or smell

>having a spicy or salty quality without being sweet

>morally good

So, "salty quality without being sweet" is savory. Meaning your "sweet and savory" peanut butter can't be savory. It is correctly, "sweet and salty".

Salty isn't umami. Savory is salty without sweet. Unami is another flavor entirely.

umami was predated by savory. Only hipsters and weeaboos use umami.

Peanut butter is more complex, but I figure that the primary draw to peanut butter is neither sweetness, nor savory flavors....it's the oily aspect of it.
