So /ck/ i would like to introduce you about one of the cheapest food in the world. It's called "Nasi Kucing", literally means "Cat's rice". Why? because the size is so small, it's smaller than your average fist. Usually they have "sambal" aka indonesian chili or a small amount of stir fried stuff. It's so cheap, one of it only cost like US$ 0.10 , but you'll need like 3 or more of it to be full. For the side dish, we'll have some fried "tempe" and tofu and other things like chicken and eggs. Most of the time, i'll just spend like $1 or less every time i eat that thing.

is the sambal just a chunky spice paste?

Made of chili, garlic, salt, tomato and shrimp paste. But there are many kind of sambals out there. All of those ingredients then will be mashed and mixed together.

Thanks for your post OP.

Is this normally eaten as a main along with those sides you mentioned or more often as a quick snack? Homemade or just bought from a stall?

You can buy many kinds of sambal in the better supermarkets here in Belgium or the Netherlands.

Its very nice to add some heat and fragrance to your stir-fry vegetables, meat or eggs!

Sambal Oelek is the most standard savory/spicy one. But there are a multiyude of varieties out there; sour, sweet, smokey, fishey, etc...

Cambodia had a couple of great roadside foods like this. Sticks of bamboo stuffed with sticky rice thrust into a fire to cook, gave it a great roast flavor. And banana stuffed rice wrapped in banana leaves. Great simple lunch.

it's... pretty salty. rice can only do so much too lessen it in my opinion, so it's always good to have a drink in hand.

i recommend fresh melon juice, goddamn that will wash you good after that meal son.

shouldnt look like pic related though. it should be ice cold, in an unsanitary plastic cup served from a broken ass wooden cart located on a dirty sidestreet

I had some when I visited my family in Indo this past December. If you're coming from the US, literally everything is cheap so I'd rather eat bubur ayam or nasi uduk or 50 sticks of sate kambing.

>> No.5697539

>>5696675
yes, we use banana leaves on lots of stuff.
>>5696727
oh nasi lemak, i also love it
>>5696886
yeah, right... 1US$ is like 12000 rupiah or something. Bubur ayam is great for breakfast. Nasi uduk and sate for dinner. nice!

How similar is Indonesian food to Philippine food?

I live around a Java Spice (an Indonesian fast food place) and have been wanting to try it out, but some of the stuff reminds me of Filipino food.
