I usually drink much better beer, but my gf just left for a week (first time being alone with her Velcro dog for more than a day), and I was thinking of buying a bunch of shit she'd judge me for just for the sake of it (yeah, it's shit I'd judge myself for wasting money on if I weren't already drunk...).

In any case, just around the corner I can pick up some special edition Narragansett Del's Shandy's.

I can drink a Gansett tall boy, or a pbr, if I'm already a bit drunk and no one's around to judge, but I've never liked Del's.

I used to feel the same. Keep trying them, especially in the warm weather. Sounds simple, but it worked for me. One day - after perseverance - I just got a craving for an IPA and I've been able to appreciate them ever since.

Some ones I like now are Thornbridge's Jaipur, Founders Centennial, Brewdog's Punk and Fullers' Bengal Lancer. They're all worth a try for someone who isn't a fan of IPAs.

>> No.5675860

A lot of IPA'a are really hoppy and bitter

Basically what makes a good IPA is the balance between the bitter citrusy hops and a smooth creamy malt. A lot of IPA's miss this mark and are just straight up hopbomb palate rapers. Of course, if you aren't use to drinking IPA's, they will all taste like that.

My suggestion is to try some other styles of beer first, just to get a general spectrum of the beer world. A lot of wannabe craft drinkers jump right into IPA's only to get their tastebuds burned and go right back to drinking Miller.

If you want an IPA that is light and smooth and flavorful, try Ballast Point Sculpin' IPA. Then you can work your way up to some more heavy hitting IPA's. But like I said, diversify your taste and try some other stuff first.

Of course, you being underage, it's hard to have a choice in what exactly you try, but best of luck to you.

In America, Russian River's Barrel Aged Belgian series are all fantastic representations of soured beers, start there.

Where are you located at anon, there may be some regional stuff I can point you in the right direction too. Otherwise, there is the Neo-Berline Weisse that Dogfish Head does, Festina Peche, that may be a little easier to find just because their distribution web is so large.

Actual Belgian/Foreign breweries? Brouwerij Boon does the Boon Gueze Lambic style I like quite a bit, the Frambois after a few years of cellaring isn't half bad either. Cantillion is another brewery to look for, but I've never seen a bottle of that in real life.

1) Get something cheap and comparatively "drinkable". Tecate is a good one.
2) Pour your beer into a big glass.
3) Mix in orange juice.
4) Voila! Drinkable beer!
5) Put in less orange juice with every beer until you find that you can enjoy the flavor on its own.

Worked for me, as well as several beer noobs. You aren't the first person to find beer too bitter to be palatable, and you won't be the last. You'll get over it, though. Orange juice is like beer training wheels.

Solid brewery, but after tasting some of their newer more experimental stuff (wethop ale, mandarina ipa, vic ipa) I've come to the conclusion that their best suit is the classic, "clean" stuff; saison, porter, dipa(both 2 cap. and #500 are great), etc.
I'm not a big fan of their ipa though, much better norwegian alternatives out there(Kinn, Ægir and even Grünerlokka)

So i actually hate beer. Ive tried quite a few different common types types but they all tasted like moldy water.

I was dragged to this specialty bar where they boast over 350 different types of bottled beer and a whole plethora on tap. They do not sell any big commercial beers. That means no bud, coors, pbr, guinness, sam adams, blue moon etc.

So my friend suggests i try a particular kind. To my surprise i actually enjoy it. It doesn't taste like moldy water. It was called dragon's milk. Some oak aged beer with 11% alcohol by volume. Which i guess is 3 times more alcohol than the cheap stuff.

So now that i know not all beer is absolute horse shit I think i might give some others a try.

For those of you who want to get "used" to beer and wanna get eased in, here's

A good way to do this is to make radlers and adjust the beer/soda amounts gradually. (Radlers are fuckin good anyways, but buying something like Stiegl Radler from a bottleshop is a ripoff).

Buy some kind of witbier, like rickard's white or hoegaarden (this will be the only time i really suggest either of these beers, so bear with me).

Anywho, get a twelve pack of that. Also get a twelve pack of SAN PELLEGRINO ARANCIATA or SAN PELLEGRINO GRAPEFRUIT. These are italian sodas that are less sweet.

Anyways start with a 50/50 mix of beer and san pellegrino, and then just taper it to your taste.
If you want to do it the hard way and jump in, just fuck yourself up with a bomber of something like rogue XS imperial IPA. It's got a 74 IBU which might not be the hoppiest beer (inb4 hops pissing contest), but it's a really tasty and hoppy IIPA. It's also 9.5%ABV, so it's up there. If you can power through that, you'll be a bit tipsy and you'll be able to handle any less-hoppy or less-boozy beer.

Surprisingly hoppy for an oatmeal stout. In a REALLY good way.

Some liquor stores ive been to the good stuff costs $4.50+ for 12oz usually in glass bottles. The cheap stuff can cost as low as $0.45 for 12oz and it only comes in a can.

Now we aren't talking going to a bar. This is going to some shady liquor store where it feels like you are gunna get shivved.

If you go to even an average sports type bar a glass of shitty beer will cost you $3 and they more than likely don't even have the good stuff. At these bars blue moon is fancy beer.

Or you can get royally fucked and buy a beer at a baseball game and pay god damn $8+ for a plastic cup of bud lite.

Not that poster, but that made me curious about something.

Were people always drinking 5% abv+ beverages? I'm sure they stored some of it longer that would be stronger, but I was wondering if people were mixing it the day before and only letting it ferment overnight.

>> No.5698931

I am not an expert, but my suspicion is that historical practice is all over the place. We do know that beer, wine, and spirits were often watered down for various purposes, including daily drinking. But it is impossible to imagine a humanity that doesn't enjoy the experience of intoxication. And considering that natural fermentation yields greatly varying results, there's no reason not to believe that 5%+ beverages were not enjoyed.

It was the moral agenda of the temperance movement that gave us the notion that the ancients only drank really REALLY weak alcohol, and that ONLY because water was too dangerous to drink.

>> No.5698943

>>5698931
Yeah, I don't believe that people didn't enjoy strong drinks sometimes.

I just think that there's no reason to not get nutrition from your drinks too. And I suppose we still have low abv drinks, like real brewed ginger beer and root beer. But most of them are just too sweet.

It's simple enough to make quick fermented drinks at home though. The longer fermented ones need more care.

Depends on the when and where. Throughout most of european history and especially in Great Britain most people (women and children included) drank smallbeer all day erry day because it had a negligible alcohol content (~1-2% ABV; pretty much just enough to stop bacterial growth) and was safer than the water. It was also homemade most of the time and bittered (if at all) with gruit. However, people still drank more potent alcoholic beverages recreationally.

So I just had a salted caramel sweet stout and a smoke and coffee porter ("Coffee and Cigarettes").

The stout tasted like a stout, with a pleasant salt before-and-after-taste, and the smoke and coffee combined to taste like stale coffee (like literally didn't taste like beer, tasted like stale coffee. Drank a lot of it. Not pleasant, but also immensely drinkable?).

I can say without a doubt it's probably the first beer I would say was "delicious".
it wasn't straight pumpkin, some nutmeg maybe, it kind of reminded me of the sweetness of Juicy Fruit gum, though I guess that isn't a very positive remark, but it's the best I can describe it

the Crazy Mountain is bland, it's just a light hoppy water practically.

then again that 1 bottle cost 2$ more than the 6pack

Did you like the flavour? If you get a lower abv stout or particularly a porter (no oatmeal stouts) the body should be similar to a pale ale. There's also English style pale ales and bitters, should focus more on the malt and less on the hops. Strong Belgian stuff is driven by yeast ferment characteristics and a bit of malt.

Frankly though I'm not too sure I can help.
