Sure, but that's another level of skill and effort.

If you're into that kinda thing it's cool, I was just suggesting an alternative,
as taking care of animals is a full-time gig (i.e. you can't just go off on a
vacation for week and leave them alone).

Hunting is a valid source of food, though I've read that when all the costs
are calculated (hunting gear, ammo and range time, license, gas, beer, etc)
a pound of venison can cost more then a pound of Kobe beef...

Of course that doesn't take into account the fun of hanging out in the woods
with your buddies.

Depends on where you live and what you want to hunt. You can get away with a ~$400 initial investment and then ~$150/year (including gas, snacks, etc.) afterwards for several hundred pounds of venison. Hell, if you have friends who hunt and you can borrow a rifle you can get away with doing all of that for less than $100. You don't need a $1600 rifle, $700 in clothes and $800 in binos and GPS.

I only know of one guy who does all his own processing and that's because he LIVES for hunting

power meat grinder, tables, laminate walls & tiled floor, etc.

Sure, one can DIY but for $80, I'd rather have it done for me and done right with no mess or fuss.

It's a couple hundred where I'm from, and that's if you can even find someone competent, so a lot of hunters form a butchering pool with their buddies and just buy the $1000 of equipment.

But yeah, as someone who works at a hunting store, I can guarantee that 80% of people spend more on hunting than if they just bought the meat. They buy thousands in add-on stuff to maximize odds, minimize work, and to buy into the hunting culture.

>> > inb4 "I totally process my deer all by myself because I'm Grizzly Adams"
>I only know of one guy who does all his own processing and that's because he LIVES for hunting (particularly deer) and built a virtual butcher shop onto his cabin, with a stainless steel bandsaw, power meat grinder, tables, laminate walls & tiled floor, etc.

My point was that it takes a $2 thrift store knife, a flat surface and a bit of sweat equity to completely process your game and the only people I know of who ship their game to a processor are too old, incompetent and/or lazy to do it by themselves or even with their friends. You implied that butchering out your animal yourself is difficult time consuming without a specialized area and specialized equipment and that it's rare to find someone that does it themselves, which in my experience is categorically false. But maybe you live in the flatlands, where deer season means "waddle to your treestand and drink beer until a deer shows up".

Except the majority of deer hunters in the U.S. are those who who waddle to their tree-stand and drink beer until the deer shows up
and thus are hardly the type to go thru the hassle of processing their own deer.

You're missing my point, we just use a fraction of an ounce, since that's infinitely divisible\ble without decimals. And a pinch is both weight and volume.

because when a recipe calls for a pinch of something by volume, you use a pinch of that volume, when it calls for a pinch of weight, you give it that weight. kind of like how a cup is both weight and volume. Have you ever used butter? Or better yet, do you know what a kitchen is?
