I am from Texas and I'm confused a bit about the hate. Here in Houston we have some really damn good tex mex, and also really good more authentic mexican food from trucks and taquerias. They are both really good in there own ways but I admit they are very different.

Do people from other states have restaurants specifically called tex mex? Do yo have tex mex and regular mexican food places? Is tex mex what yall just refer to crappy mex food or is all you have crappy mexican food? Any body sampled tex mex from texas and other states and care to compare?

I've been to VA and my brother took me to their best mexican restaurant and it was appalling.

You realize that Tex Mex isn't "americanized" in the sense that one day someone imported some tacos, right? Texas, like the rest of the goddamn southwest, used to be Mexico. Tex Mex developed right alongside "muh authentic" Mexican food.

Tex mex is more mex than tex and tex isnt what it used to be. used to be you could get a good steak off the hoof down here not anymore. The mex has changed as well it used to be called mexican food down here now fajitas is considered texmex. Used to be a good mexican place had shitty lighting 1 kind of enchalladas, a fajita plate, Tacos if you wanted them and refried beans and rice with everything, Oh and salsa that would give you a sore throat the next day. Now its carne guisada and 10 types of other crap. you know what your problem is its that there is no TEX anymore it is Mexican food.

Its not even that you don't like it, its that you will hate it just because someone is trying to experience something new and higher than shit quality.

I don't doubt it. But the important thing is you went and actually tried it.

Also, although the execution of the food sucks, i'm sure there are at least a few decent ideas there (ie turning dried peppers into a paste instead of a powder, etc).

OP confirmed for being states away from Texas. tex mex in Texas is usually very very good, it's my favorite kind of food. I've had good stuff in a couple states east and some OK stuff in Oklahoma. Had some good shit in New Mexico and Arizona too but it's a little different over there, not quite tex mex but nice.

Really all Americanized mexican food gets lumped into the category of tex mex, and you guys up north are seriously fucking it up. I have family up there who were dying to take me to the best mexican restaurant in the state because they knew I like that kind of food, I wanted to vomit it was so bad. I went to several mexican, or tex mex restaurants up there and nothing was good.

Don't hate on tex mex until you come to the south, it is really good. I also like actual Mexican food.

>cited from El Tiempo website

The true origins of Tex-Mex cuisine are somewhat shrouded in mystery.

Tex-Mex’s history stretches back to the late 1800s when Mexican immigrants began to populate south Texas. They brought with them recipes that they developed over the years in Mexico and added a few twists to appeal to American tastes. Essentially, Tex-Mex is A harmonious blend of Texas flavors and Mexican food. Originally adapted from Tejano home cooking, this eclectic style of cooking exists mainly in restaurants.

When the Spanish pulled out of Texas in the late 1700s, they left behind spanish-speaking Indian missionaries and eventually became known as Tejanos. These Native American Indians began the traditional cooking that founded Tex Mex. The Spaniards also we're responsible for bring Canary Islanders to expand the colonization of Texas. Those colonists brought with them the spiced blends and signature flavors of Morocco. When these two traditional and flavor groups united, traditional Tex Mex was born

Signature dishes like Chili con Carne, rich with cumin, garlic and chili, had never been seen in traditional Mexican cuisine. These new spice combinations set the stage for what was to become Tex Mex history in 1970; The Fajitas.

Probably the most significant addition to Tex Mex cuisine, Fajitas were originally introduced as Tacos al Carbon. Houston’ own Ninfa Laurenzo was credited with the creation on July 13, 1973. The amazing aspect of Tex Mex is that it is both foreign and native. It is a unique blend of flavors and cultures from across the sea and those that are right next door.

>The true origins of Tex-Mex cuisine are somewhat shrouded in mystery.

Shrouded in mystery, top kek. It couldn't possibly just be that one culture smashed with a different one and a hybrid was formed, like in all situations? Wow good job, Batman, you cracked the case again.
