All brown liquor fans/haters/gen thread.

Also question by uninformed: Giving gift to Jim Beam lover but want to get person a nicer bourbon, is double aged Jim Beam better?
Suggestions of better bourbons/reason why welcome.

Lets talk brown.

This stuff is pretty great for the price. Good flavor profile, smooth, and affordable.

Another good, affordable bourbon.

If a person loves Jim Beam, you aren't going to find them a replacement that they like. Only Jim Beam tastes like Jim Beam.

I agree with Buffalo Trace, but there's a major shortage right now so you probably won't be able to find it.

Eagle Rare is good, and so is Blanton's. Bulleit is also nice.

Do people drink bourbon without mixing it? Personally I only use it for cocktails - its nice on its own, but i figure you would just drink whiskey if thats what you were after?

Does dark spiced rum count?

Old Monk is great, dirt cheap and well drinkable if not good. It's as brown as the Ganges.

when I get a new bottle of any whiskey, I have a bit straight/with a bit of water to get a feel for it, then I use it however I want. Last week I made dish with some vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, graham crackers, and a bit of bulleit bourbon.

IMO it's best served straight or in a cocktail that emphasizes it.

nowadays i drink almost all of my liquor straight so I stick to browns quite a bit. bourbon, scotch, anejo.

which brings me to my next point. Anejo is under-talked-about when it comes to sipping liquor. Tequila is every bit the art that bourbon or scotch is.
