That stuff drives me up the wall. I went through all that, but I transitioned and quickly moved on with my life (although I'm a lot lucky in that sense). What you don't seem to understand is that this *is* the real world for these people. It is entirely possible to live in a bubble where "ze" is an accepted part of everyday speech. Most people will go their whole lives not meeting such a person because it is only really possible to do this in a tolerant (and I mean that in the most technical sense, don't get butthurt) and sympathetic environment. You can choose to ignore it as many people do, but it's no different than training yourself to say "latina" to refer to a female person who self-identifies as latin american, rather than a blanket "latino" regardless of gender, even if spanish is not your native tongue (or, you can view the gender distinctions of isolated spanish words in english dialogue as a sign of a sinister plot to bring about La Reconquista).

Before you fly off the handle and accuse me of imposing my agenda, this is not *my* agenda, I am not trans, or even gay, and it takes a conscious effort on my part not to slip up when I'm visiting the social circle that this individual is a part of. At the same time, trying to play off a different set of values as liberal hogwash is silly considering how sensitive certain people on the right have gotten lately (see: war on christmas, small towns in bumfuckistan passing laws against sharia law, gunfags seeing technical discrepancies in movies as part of a vast gun grabber agenda, etc). Yes, you're right, however the problem is whenever those people leave their bubbles, and find out that very few people are going to play the pronoun games or buy into their identities.

In their bubble, it may very well be "the real world" for them, but reality is a very different place outside. SF is a place like that, it's a city full of people who don't fit in elsewhere go to fit in, and it feels like quite an enormous bubble inside of it. Things you see people do or wear on a typical day in SF wouldn't fly in other places, and people from there might feel a culture shock leaving the city and think how "intolerant" other places are, but the reality is that it's not that other places are less tolerant, it's that in SF you're in a bubble where everyone is for gay rights, everyone loves organic non-GMO foods, and most everyone votes similarly. That's "the real world" for the people who live there, but again, actual reality isn't a happy and ideologically homogenous place.

The laws literally do nothing. Inserting Islamic religious beliefs is already not going to happen because there's just not really anyone asking for it here, and even if they were, it would be against the 1st amendment to actually have sharia. So it's already banned by the constitution, nobody is asking for it, and I guarantee the places passing these laws have like, three muslims, maximum.

So the laws do literally nothing, it's just a way for the politicians passing them to get christian votes by showing how much they hate kebab.
