Bread made and risen over night, baked in the morning or the other way around. Depending on shifts, I may make something in the morning and people can heat it up in the evening if I'm not home.

The problem with many young families these days appears to be that they don't want to say no to their children.
I saw it around me growing up (my parents were both 40 when they had me, so they were the generation prior to the parents of my classmates) - parents just would let their children command their lives.
I was never given choices. Mum would cook X and we would eat X, regardless of whether we liked it or not. I once had a friend over who didn't eat lasagne (of all things) and when he complained to Mum, she said something along the lines of "Believe it or not, this isn't a restaurant. I'm sorry you don't like what I've made, but there's nothing wrong with it. You can go hungry if you like, because I'm not making you anything else.

The "reasoning" (if you can call it that) is because some kids are allergic to some foods, those foods need to be kept out of the school period. Both of my parents cooked when I was a kid. We very rarely went out to eat. I never liked fast food--even as a kid--because it simply didn't taste as good as what my parents made at home.
