I'm British and we didn't do this but I know Americans who have. Though I believe the best way to learn words is through language, media, and literature, I have found that the Americans I know have a wider vocabulary than myself (I mostly learned new words through reading novels). It has impressed me but whether or not it's necessary or a good method is another issue.

Not usually just lists, but from what I remember in elementary school there are activities that incorporate new words. It's to become more familiar with our own language because english is such a clusterfuck of a language, so that we don't sound like idiots when we reach adulthood.

That sounds like a normal sort of thing to me, I'm perplexed as to what the systems are in other countries if this is not standard.

Modern humans, despite the fact that nearly all humans have non-Homo Sapiens DNA, are 99.98% related to each other. Genetically, we are a very homogenous species.

And we don't even HAVE Erectus DNA to study from, and even if we did, Erectus was extinct in Africa by the time Homo Sapiens came along, and was only found in Asia.
