The inside is just rice, onions, and usually meat.

Yeah... the thing is. The entire point of the dish is for the grape leaves. It's what makes it different from.... Kotleti (meat, rice, and onion patties), and Golubtsi (meat, rice, and onion stuffed into Bell Peppers.)

So, to take out the stuffing would be like if someone served you a American style Turkey and Stuffing, and you just took out the stuffing and ate it, not eating the turkey. Lol.

Also, russians hate wasting food.... and it's universally accepted that "picking through your food" is in bad manners. So yeah... I think they would talk shit and say "if he wanted that, we could have sold him a bag of rice and a package of ground beef..."

My friend suffers ("suffers") from Alopecia.
