That's great but you really need to watch that fish.
Depending on where it's from, it could contain traces of DDT, PCBs and PAHs. Even the farm-raised stuff has mercury.

You should include whole grains and legumes, and of course don't limit yourself to non-sugary fruit, eat any fruit you want. I can understand thinking that more sugar = bad, but even the sugariest fruit, when looked at clinically and scientifically, shows health benefits

>Christ, it feels good to have an uncorrupted palate.
I don't know if I'd use the word uncorrupted, but the wife and I have been eating mostly plant based foods for two years now. We have meat, fish or cheese maybe once a week, and the rest of the time it's vegetable based meals - stuff a vegan would eat.

At this point tons of stuff tastes great that was just OK before. Lunch today was dal and cauliflower curry over rice, and my wife commented, "A couple years ago I wouldn't have found this the least bit interesting, but it's really delicious."

When we have meat and/or cheese it's still delicious as well, it just tastes heavy. I had my first cheeseburger in over a year the other day, and it was very tasty. But it left the inside of my mouth covered in grease in a way I almost found unpleasant. All I could think was, "It'll probably be another year before I have another one of those."

It is true; you can change your taste. Unlike OP I don't see it as something to brag about. But it is interesting that it can be done. Because many of us base part of our identity on our food preferences, and it turns out they're something that's completely changeable.

I hope you realize that the omega-3 you find in seeds is vastly, vastly less bioavailable than that you find in fish. Seeds contain omega 3s in the form of ALA which the body then has to convert to the more useful forms of EPA and DHA and it does so extremely inefficiently. Less than 5% of ALA gets converted to EPA, and less than 0.5% of ALA is converted to DHA.

Basically, unless you're eating fish, give the fuck up. Nothing you get from a plant source will do you any good.

This is the same thing people say about beta-carotene and vitamin A conversion, but the reality is your body makes what it needs and scales its conversion according to what your diet is. If you eat a lot of pre-formed DHA/EPA, you convert less ALA. If you eat less DHA/EPA, you convert more ALA.

If you read the actual study

All they're saying is that they compared presumably self-reported omega 3 intake to plasma fatty acid levels and found that people who didn't eat fish ate less omega 3 than people who did and their fatty acid levels were lower, just not as low as would have been expected according to current knowledge of ALA conversion.

It doesn't mean that ALA is all you need, it just means that if you don't eat fish, your body is possibly not quite as terrible at converting it as previously thought.

For more detail, there's also this commentary on the study:

If you actually read the study

http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/92/5/1040/T5.expansion.html

Large difference in omega-3 intake, very little difference in total DHA and EPA circulating in the blood. The vegans there barely ate any omega-3 and yet they still ended up with about the same blood levels, and somehow ended up with more EPA than the fish eaters. Imagine people who also include omega-3 heavy foods like walnuts and flax seeds in their diet and you can see how getting omega-3 from plant foods isn't just adequate but ideal due to the other health benefits related to those foods.

More omega 3 isn't necessarily good. The most important thing relating to omega threes is that you have a 1:1 ratio of 3 and 6. Having more 3 than 6 can lead to a tendency towards stomach ulcers.

Not that guy, but I'm a fan of flax, which has about a 4:1 ratio of 3 to 6. Chia seeds are either 4:1 or 3:1 as well
