I live in Czech Republic and with pike fish it´s like the only fish nurseries have to breed because we eat it like madmen. If you go fishing you are likely to get home with carp. It´s even our christmas traditional meal with potato salad. As >>5374432

My grandma who grew up in the depression goes on about wonderful carp she ate as a child and its really good.
I live next to the Mississippi river in MN, and I would need to go far up it to want to feel safe to eat it - but most likely not at all. All the farm fertilizer and iron range mercury is right at the head of the river. Anything below MN shouldn't even consider fishing it.
However, the large Mung community catches the and eats them a lot. So do Cambodians. They're all pretty cool. A lot better than the Somalian refugees they shoved up in St. Cloud. They only came because they had no home, not because they want to be here, so they are generally not nice or recluse. The older ones are mellow though.

They are really good to eat, but they are a fish that has for some reason been vilified in most of American culture. Where I live everyone knows the joke about cooking a carp on a board, tossing the carp out, and eating the board. As well as, "carp eat nothing but shit/feces" type comments. Or that they have 3-4-5-6 sets of ribcages are and all bones and not worth eating.

I think you can make almost anything taste good if you work hard enough. Compared to other fish it would be really hard to make carp palatable. I don't doubt there's a way to make carp good, but its a low tier fish.

I'm a professional fisherman and holy shit carp suck. They are essentially giant goldfish, and it shows. They're disgusting bottom-feeders, put up a shitty fight on the line, and taste like cock compared to everything else in the lake.

Side note: anyone got a soul food kind of recipe for blue striped grunts? My charters catch them all the time but we never eat them. I feel like they could be delicious when properly prepared.

My dad makes a glorious smoked carp.
Basically you filet a carp and soak the meat in a simple brine for a few hours to a day, then you prepare your smoker with coals and soaked Hickory wood chips (he might add a few other types of wood not sure)

It turns out tasting really good, like a combination of fish and ham. Great food for drunks

Not native fish and also there are a ton of them. There's a spillway in northern PA (Pymatuning) where there's so many carp that the ducks basically walk on them. When you used to be able to throw bread, they'd all fight over it.

The reason they're so maligned now in the U.S. is because they aren't "convenient" to eat. Lots of intramuscular bones. You can't get a nice, clean filet out of a carp the way you can more commonly eaten fish.

Not all species of carp are equally desirable in the culinary sense. Environment (water quality and diet, mostly) plays a major factor in how tasty or disgusting the carp will be.

Good, your carp is probably edible, might still taste a little muddy from its diet, if the substrate of the river system is soft silt rather than hard-rock/pebbles. However, if you're inclined to try, there shouldn't be too much of a problem.

A bath-tub works, so does a large aquarium. My next door neighbor used to have a kiddie pool with a carp or two swimming about, along with an bubbler to keep the water oxygenated.

Fish are rather prone to 'absorbing' the taste of whatever is in the water. Fish caught in polluted waterways or very close to industrial sites often smell and taste like a mixture of mud and petroleum.

if you dont submerge it in clean water swapped out frequently, it'll taste pretty bad. if you do, it can taste quite clean, especially if you avoid the mud line. it might sound like broscience, but it's actually true
