But to me and my friends (at the time Kitchen Confidential came out) he made fun of sell out cooks like Bobby Flay and the Food Network at the time. We were livid that Emeril was taking over the channel with his shitty cooking show (to the point of burning an effigy of him one night (we were young (and drunk))). He sold himself as the "no bullshit" chef/cook who wouldn't sell out... and then he did. It was a major let down.
I mean, a guy's gotta make money, no shame in that, and I love watching Marco's Knorr videos with this in mind, but Anthony contradicted himself (lied, really) and he lost all our respect in doing that.
I don't hate him, he doesn't deserve that level of attention. I just think that he is full of shit and I dislike his prose/beat type of writing.

Full disclosure: I like his writing/TV shows.

He was never a Michelin rated haute cuisine guy. He was a tradesman, and I think he'd be the first to cop to that.

The last real restaurant he worked at was a French bistro type joint where bottles of wine are half price on Monday.

He's famous for his personality, and he even busts his balls over that, i.e. the countless references to '[my job] is not a real job', etc.

He's a quite literary fellow, honestly. Only his metaphors and witticisms are built upon American cultural references, rock music, and general extremism. He's an interesting guy. I find him a little overbearing sometimes, but he puts on a decent show, and is a pretty gracious guest in his travels.

I love when he's really in his element, like the French Laundry and Momofuku scenes. The Chicago episode is good too.

The move to CNN really reflected the last season of NR. And really it was kind of stupid that he went to Iraq or Myanmar or any number of other extremely dangerous places to eat food that most people wouldn't even touch. It honestly felt exploitative, in that way that weather reporters stand outside during extreme weather. It just looked like a big dumb white guy out on safari (leaving out the several episodes where he was in fact a big dumb white guy out on safari). Zimmern did Bourdain's schtick on the Travel Channel and actually kept it tight and honest while still managing to be goofy as fuck.
