If you can't afford to go out and have a coffee and tip the barista, you should go out for coffee. Because you are obviously living beyond your means.

Americans don't mind if any non-government entity infringes on their freedoms or steals money from them.

The capitalist propaganda was more successful than expected.

For coffee? I tip if I had my day brightened with eye contact, a greeting, or concern that it was made how I wished.
If I'm a regular at a coffeeshop, I've found tips get you some free refills and occasional perks, like someone breaking out some free samples of something while you're there. Yes, it does stem the guilt when you're known as a nontipper, as well. To each their own, though. If you got ordinary service, brusque or even impersonal, skip it. It's not mandatory to tip a barista or cashier. If they walk a warmed up sandwich to your table, maybe. If someone collected your dirty plate, so you didn't have to get up and leave your laptop unattended to clear a little space, tip.

This is why places like Japan is so much better.. like their family restaurants.

Touchscreen at your table to get exactly what you want.
No tip.
Water spout so you can easily refill.
Button so no need to flag down a waiter who doesn't see you or is "busy"
