It's a marketing ploy. They build hype and then take it away. Then they're going to bring them back later and expect massive sales when everyone freaks out about it.

I seriously doubt it actually works. I'm glad Whataburger wised up and started selling their best stuff all the time.

I think it works and I think the taco bell marketing execs know what they fuck they are doing. Everyone has those old discontinued items that they loved and were taken away and replaced by some new soon to be discontinued item that a whole new people are going to love.

Think about it all the crap they've had that everyone will nostalgia over later just like the chili burrito now. What I hope they do in the future is have some sort of throwback menu or throwback seasonal item where they bring back an old favorite as a limited time promotional item and we can all have some nostalgia over old favorites. Maybe seasonally bring something back from the old days.

The buffalo sauce. They still have "a" buffalo sauce, but it's not the same. They stopped serving it once they started promoting their sauces for chicken nuggets. The new buffalo sauce is just a fat/butter + sugar + red/orange food dye concoction, whereas the old one was a thinner, more vinegar-based sauce, that was spicier and more subtle tasting.

The only reason I ever went to McDonald's was for a order of fries w/ some buffalo sauce. Now I just don't go there.

It works perfectly. As >>5163575 said.

To support this theory, as a previous employee of Taco Bell I noticed they never took the "chili cheese burrito" option off the cash register's selections even as other things were removed or reduced to being "assembled" from other options. They never planned to drop it forever, just to let it build hype.
