Holy shit WHY ?
Why does Scandinavia have so weird foods that taste like shit to the rest of us ?
I just got these as a present and fuck me, they're so strong and bad it's incredible. Do people honestly like these ?

>> No.5132015

Oh fuck, I love salmiak licorice. Damn that stuff is good--but then again, I grew up in Denmark so that's pretty normal.

Anyway, all countries have foods that taste like crap to foreigners. This is sort of the Scandinavian equivalent of marmite.

What is it, just really strong licorice? I suppose it would be analogous in some way to Fisherman's Friend throat lozenges, they have a really very strong licorice taste and were mostly used by fisherman as a remedy for cold or a preventative. They're not actual licorice, though, just have a lot in them. I wouldn't mind trying this salmiak stuff I quite like licorice.

Salmiak is licorice that has ammonium chloride added to it. "Salmiak" is a cognate of "sal ammoniac", the old-fashioned chemical name for ammonium chloride. It's also called "Salt licorice".

>> No.5132047

My mom loves that shit, especially the really salty stuff that usually only foreigners like.

I tried to make myself like black licorice in 1st grade because our teacher would give out licorice and the kids who liked the black licorice got extra. It never took though, I hate the stuff.

Oh. I've tried salt licorice here (UK) do you think it's likely the same stuff or tweaked for our differing palates? 'Cause in all honesty the licorice I tried wasn't all that different from good regular licorice apart from a stronger flavour and softer texture. It wasn't Fisherman's Friend-level strength, though.

american candy fucking disgusting, even mediocre salmiac is better than murrishit candy

don't be a hfcs baby

I'm guessing it was a weaker version but perhaps similar in flavor. I have never seen proper Scandanvavian-type salmiak outside of Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, etc. I do have family in England and I've tried a lot of English licorice but it's not as strong. Some of the scandanavian brands are stronger than Fisherman's Friend. I know the Danish "super piratos" are, and there was a Finnish brand I tried as well but I can't recall the name.

Super Piratos are excellent.

The bag actually claims it's for adults only. Probably because it raises your blood pressure.

It said "salted licorice" on the label, I think it had a Panda (?!) on the label, not the best but not the worst by any means.
wow some Scando brands are STRONGER than Fisherman's Friends?! Jesus that is pretty strong. I find it hard going to get through one whole lozenge if I'm being honest!

is it true you guys dont get root beer?

Both are salmiac flavoured licorice. The one on the left is covered in some salty powder and is a type of gummy, and the on the left is a hard shell with a really spicy liquid on the inside.

Some stores have imported sodas and stuff so you can get it, but I've never tried root beer.

I was on vacation in Denmark and brought two packs of these back home. Shit lasts forever, it's incredible. Can't eat more than 3 of those in one sitting or your whole tongue is coated in salmiak goodness.

The powder mixes with your saliva and creates an unholy sludge of dark matter, but you're right; feels like liquid.

This one got it right. You can best see that it's powder from the broken up ones in the bag as the powder from them falls on the bottom of the bag.

OP here, I also got Djungelvral but I still haven't opened it. Tell me what should I expect, is it the same as salty licorice or different ?

>> No.5133037

>>5132989
There isn't much to expect, lots of salt and a bit of surprisingly hard licorice. It's not bad but I wouldn't say it's good either.
