I've never had suntory but japanese whisky has a very good reputation, not sure what you're complaining about.

Beam has some ok products (their rye, old overholt) and mark wahlberg is a decent bourbon but neither are anything to write home about

>> No.5098379

Suntory already owns Morrison Bowmore Distillers and a cognac house or two.
I don't think they're looking to change anything, just to own things for the sake of ownership.

Since the old one is on auto-sage, whiskey thread? Whiskey thread.

Read mostly negative things about Johnnie Walker, but tried a sample of the Black Label and it was pretty damn good. Not sure if it's $40 good, but I really enjoyed it, especially the smokiness. Where do I go from here, and would Red Label be worth picking up despite it being considered shit-tier if I liked the Black Label so much?

>> No.5098608

>>5098604
red label's only worth picking up if you can find a bottle from the '70s.

>> No.5098611

Get the green label. It's the only one not mixed with neutral grain spirits.

Red Label is shit, and at the Black Label and beyond's prices, you may as well just try to find a good single malt you like

Most Japanese whiskys are far better than Jim anyway; if anything the distilleries could learn a thing or two from Suntory.

Besides if I want bourbon I tend to go with Buffalo Trace for myself, or Evan Williams for something cheap to drink with friends.

Maker's is pretty damn good, but it probably won't change much. The Japanese are snobbish over the quality of whiskeys; they aren't looking to degrade its quality as that would hurt them both domestically and abroad. With Jim's debts covered, maybe the distillery can now try out some new stuff, like other higher-quality labels analogous to Maker's. Or at least I'd like to see that.

They generally are. Blended malts don't count.

Whisk(e)y drinker living in Tokyo for the past few years. Just for curiosity sake, here are some prices (assuming 100yen to the dollar):
Jim Beam White Label - $12
Green Label (used to be mentioned as 5yr, now no age statement) - $15
Black Label (used to be 8yr, now no age) - $19
Maker's Mark - $23

Amazingly reasonable for 750ml of quality distilled product...

Is there a much of a bootleg problem in Tokyo, or are Johnnie Walker products just different there? The Green Label, which they don't anymore, was aged 15 years, and the Black Label is 12.
