Overall it's just a terrible example of Scotch whiskey.

Sorry, but if you think buffalo trace is the best you can get for 30 bucks or less, you either live in a hellhole of expensive alcohol or don't know much about whiskey. Ezra B. 12 year single barrel, Evan William's 12 YO single barrel and the 12 year old expression of elijah craig are superior whiskeys and can be had for about as much as buffalo trace. Black Label is pretty good with one cube in it. Let it sit for just a bit before drinking. Same goes for blue label but...yeah expensive.

For bourbon I would go with Knob Creek if you like heat.

Mixing I think Crown works well or neat but paired with certain sweets like vanilla or berry. (vanilla ice cream and berry pie is pretty fuckin choice)

If you like a lot of smoke go with McCarthy's single malt, it comes out of portland, it tastes like a god damn campfire, its amazing.

If you want some interesting stuff to have neat try Suntory Habiki, I didn't really know Japan produced a lot of good whiskey till about a year ago, but its good stuff, a little hot like bourbons but not so intense.

If you can, never turn down a glass of pappy van winkle, but more importantly never turn down a 2nd, the 2nd is always better.

Both Pappy van Winkle and William Larue Weller (the antique collection one) are absolutely world-class, and both are wheated bourbons. Just has to be done properly, like with any style of whiskey. Ya, older=better is a pleb level mistake. There's a point past which whiskey stops improving, and a point after that where it actually gets worse. It's even more pronounced with bourbon. Chuck Cowdery (one of the world's greatest experts on American whiskey) has said he thinks bourbon hits its peak around the 12 year mark, and generally doesn't like anything much older than that, although most people would put it at 14-17 years.

Anyone who suggests that Knob Creek is an exemplar in any price range is an idiot.

I'm also getting sick of Woodford. On a good bottling, it's really, REALLY good. But I've had enough stinkers to know that it's got some major consistency problems. Among cheaper rums to buy the cheaper rums, neither of your selections are about quality. You're still in the mass market mindset of "brands" over ratings.

For "budget" depending on where you live is a HUGE consideration for what you have to pay. Between imports fees and muncipality control and fees, a big bit of price is local advertising by the specific importer to push it, as well as competition. If you live somewhere without a Total Wine, boohoo, and if you live somewhere with only an ABC controlled by your county, oh man, you don't even get a good selection either.

Not sure if I should make another thread but this seems related.

Situation: My son in law came over with my daughter last week and he apparently found out I like a good dram. I have no idea what got into his head but he gave me pic related. Now, I love my whisky (note that's not "whiskey") but he obviously doesn't drink or else he'd know better. My shelves are lined with the good stuff - Lagavulin 12, Laphroaig Cask Strength, and Ardbeg. I keep a bottle of Talisker around for when there's a pleb visiting.

Needless to say, I cannot have this in my cabinet. It's a blend, made by Johnnie Walker of all things, and you can undoubtedly calculate how many bottles of Ardbeg he could have gotten me instead. I smiled and shook his hand but I later instructed my daughter (in writing) to make sure this never happens again.

Anyway, obviously I have to do something. They're coming again to visit next weekend and the bottle needs to have some missing when they get here. I could pour some out but the ancient artisans who lovingly crafted this rare spirit will be spinning in their graves if I did that.

So, what mixes well with Blue Label? I only ever drink single malts neat from a Glencairn glass, or at most with a tiny splash of Speyside Glenlivet bottled water to bring out the nuances. I do *not* want the nuances. I was thinking of getting some Drambuie to mix in, but that's disgustingly sweet. Any less discerning gentlemen out there who could recommend something? Perhaps a good bottle of tonic water?

Indeed.

I think the powdered sugar gives a little foam, but I buy the powdered egg white when I find it. It's usually at Whole Foods. I've been meaning to try Eggbeaters whites. I also add a slice of orange, rather than lemon, and a good splash of the maraschino juice with that cherry garnish.

My whisky of choice for them is Jamesons. I pick up that sherry note, and no smoke.

>Best whiskey/bourbon for sipping under $25-30?
You're starved for choices here when it comes to American whiskies:
Elmer T. Lee
Elijah Craig 12
Rittenhouse Rye
Old Grand-Dad 114
Evan Williams Single Barrel
Weller 107
Four Roses Small Batch (usually a bit out of your price range, but you can find it for $30 if you know where to look)

Honestly, I'd have a harder time listing things in that price range that aren't worth trying at least once. Stay away from anything under 85 proof. Don't get Knob Creek unless you can find it for under $25- it tends to be hugely overpriced. I think Jim Beam Devil's Cut is disgusting, but that's just me. Bulleit is massively overrated, IMO (their rye is a bit better).

As for other varieties of whisk(e)y, your options aren't nearly as good. I'm not the right person to ask about Irish. There aren't many scotches in that price range I can recommend. Black Bottle is a surprisingly decent blend. I've heard good things about Pig's Nose as well. As for single malts, the Glens ('livet and 'fiddich) are both solid. Canadian whisky sucks. While there's no accounting for taste, I can make a pretty good semi-factual argument for why I feel that way

>Best whiskey/bourbon for mixing under $25-30? I usually go with whiskey & ginger for that smooth taste.
>Any good mixes for whiskey?
Whisk(e)y tends not to be a very good mixer. It's much better in drier, more spirit-forward drinks-Manhattans, old fashioned, Sazeracs, etc. Ginger ale or ginger beer is one of the only things I'd recommend. As for the whiskey, just get something cheap.

1. Some shit pizza I bought south of Washingtion Square Park in NYC when I was in HS, I took one bite of that pizza and spit it up into the closest garbage can whilst throwing the rest into same can. That's a place I avoid now. That's an NYU area, known for shit food and shit degrees.

2. Shit I made for myself. I made a salsa which was really good in a blender, apparently I didn't clean out the blender properly and made some daqueris in it. After I made them my girlfriend and I tasted them looked at each other and spat them out into the kitchen sink. 17- The world adores American clothing, not Canadian.

18- The world adores American TV, not Canadian.

19- The world models their country after America, not Canada.

20- We are better looking.

21- Americans have bigger penises.

22- More Canadians move to the USA, than Americans move to crappy Canada, despite the fact that there is 10 times more people in the USA.

23- You have Saskatchewon, and we don't.

24- Americans are ass-kickers.

25- Canadians are ass-kissers.

27 -America has 17 times more Nobel Prizes.
