Okay here goes:

In Michigan, cold and getting colder.
Don't have to work cuz of snow.
Wife went to work and wants chili.
Have everything already in the house.
Inb4 beans!?!?!??! r u crzy!?!?!?!?

So I have made chili lotsa times but looking at the Intertubes and see tons of recipes that use beer.

I never used beer in chile.

Should I?

You've got to try it once so why not now? Personally I find if you use too much beer there's an unpleasant underlying bitterness, so I would suggest caution if you're intending to use it as your entire liquid component.

Since the chili is for tonight I presume you're intending to brown your meat, onions/mirepoix?

Always make chili at least a day in advance.

If you do, use a dark beer or ale.

At a chili cook off, our neighbor table used jack and you could tell. It also tasted like shit.

You can try it, then figure it out for yourself.

But if you do use beer, don't use something too light or dark. Go for nice amber medium-style beer.

Pic related: Lone Star Chilli from a few months back

Used Stella Artois (Belgian lager) as the closest beer I had to what the original recipe called for.

It was OK but I've had better. Don't really think that beer adds anything vital to the flavour, but I haven't tried making chilli with a bunch of different beers yet. Will be experimenting with stout next.

I'm all about this. I really can't understand all-meat chili, it just seems waaay to dense and greasy for my stomach. All I can use it for is a topping or garnish to make shitty hotdogs tolerable.

Otherwise beans are the way to go. Meatless Mondays rule.

recipe plz? I love chili.

beer isn't that noticable but it does add a savory character that would'nt be there if you used tasteless water instead. try using a shiner bock, thats a pretty good standard.

Yes, you should. I always use beer in chili. It adds a nice flavor dimension to it, the same as red wine does for certain beef dishes or white wine in sauces for fish or seafood. I recommend using beer and a high quality beef broth for your liquids.

I'd have to work in NYC, I prefer getting there in the first place since that's more fun. But yeah I like to save what I can for those off site working privs. Those are fun... It's always best to work on site for the simple reason that a person is there, and it's best to be me or you, or whomever.

Cheers...

The funny thing is that they'll offer some taxi driver to get me home, but it's a lot more fun in the snow for me to go get a sammach and get a yellow taxi. It costs the company a lot less too, but that's not what they want.

>> No.5078144

They're a lot more high budget, and that what keeps them going, and certain companys getting fucked. That's not every company you fucking assholes!
