There is only one answer to this riddle.

>go to Chipotle, order your burrito
>it will be crowded like it always is, so you have time before your food is ready
>run over to Five Guys and get a large order of fries
>bring your fries over to Chipotle and your burrito should be ready by now

I've driven across flyover land and I can assure you, literally every place looks like that. For a years after that I had occasional nightmares of never ending scenery scrolling where Chipotle, the Sprint Store, Starbucks, The Container Store, Home Depot, Michael's Craft Supply, The UPS Store, Taco Bell, Auto Zone, Edible Arrangements, and (if it was a "nice" part of flyover land) The Body Shop, with a super mario hallucination of infinite side scrolling SUVs and pink faced ham beasts devouring California Pizza Kitchen.

Sometimes I have to visit these kinds of places for work and when the taxi pulls out of the airport I have to take a few deep breaths to avoid panic as I see the infinite plain of horror expand in front of me.

Plenty of posters here have called it overpriced and overrated... i'm inclined to believe them. i don't care for shitty greasy burgers and shitty greasy fries as it is, much less ones that probably aren't worth what they're asking you to pay.

people like you wanna go to places with novel names like 5 guys to pay for what you shallowly perceive is a culturally authentic and rewarding (pseudo) working-class greasy spoon experience, which is in fact as tasteless and unsatisfying as that unremarkable burger you're raving about.

Not the anon you're replying to, but I know that feel. I too have had to travel to places where people actually line up to eat at the Olive Garden, and the deep, quiet horror of being stuck in such a place is soul crushing. Cheese on everything, and ranch dressing as a table condiment - suicide is better than that.

I actually like sriracha personally... that doesn't mean that it's not also trendy and "hip" for a lot of clueless people who just wanna be seen by their peers with a bottle conspicuously close to their plate of pad thai.

...and i never said chipotle was especially fancy, just geared towards a target market of individuals who want to be seen as "fancy"... or perhaps urbane would be a better word.

and yeah starbucks is definitely hip in many ways... you're a fool if you think otherwise.

uh yeah... many of these restaurant chains like chipotle may have started out as places genuinely focused on the food. however, once a place like that goes gung-ho corporate in the way chipotle has it becomes about the money and shareholders. chipotle markets not just its food, but its entire image (the way its restaurants are designed, the way its menus are worded, the way its ingredients are showcased, the way its logo is presented, even its prices, etc) to appeal to a certain group of intensely image conscious people.

of course image conscious people eat at chain restaurants... chains like chipotle are not marketed the same way as ostensibly lower-end chains like wendy's or mcdonald's, but the business models and marketing methodologies are very similar, just geared towards different demographics.

image conscious people want others to perceive them in a certain way, and more importantly, want to perceive themselves in a certain way... chains are specifically marketed to appeal to these desires for conspicuous consumption.

>> No.4993202

>>4993183
>chains are specifically marketed to appeal to these desires for conspicuous consumption.
You are correct. I was thinking of image consciousness as more of an elite thing, like the way celebrities maintain a specific image as part of their jobs.

But you're totally right. While we laugh at people eating at places like the Olive Garden, for some it's a mark of being middle class. I can see how a place like Chipotle takes the "ethnic" stigma out of having a burrito for lunch, and Five Guys stays in business by selling a non-ghetto burger and fries.

I just never eat at chains, so I never thought about it. But that's got to be what they're doing, or they wouldn't stay in business. Because dollar for dollar you're still not going to beat Taco Bell or Mickey D's value menu. So you have to sell class consciousness.

That's funny to me, because eating at any chain restaurant seems trashy in my view. But I'm privileged to live in a place where there are so many options I never have to.

I wasn't arguing that chipotle customers were oblivious to marketing or the image of the chain.

I was expressing my shock at your choice of descriptors.

the type of person who considers chipotle anything but a cheap convenient place to wolf down a utility lunch is highly unlikely to consider "urbane" as a potential label for his own self image. assuming he even knows the word and doesn't mistake it for a misspelling of "urban"
