General Wine thread with question attached

I am in urgent need of help, /ck/! I know nothing about wine but I am wanting to give someone a bottle of Merlot for Christmas. I'd like to get her a British Columbian wine, but I worry because I know nothing about wine. Here's where I really worry, she lives in California where they have some of the best, or so I've heard, and she's a bit of a connoisseur.

So please, could any knowledgeable people help me out with this?

What's with all these fucking threads of people who admittedly don't know shit about wine wanting to give it as a gift?

Hey, at least we're admitting to not knowing anything. I don't really drink but I know it's her favorite, so I thought it would be a thoughtful gift.

If you are not prepared to do the thing properly you may as well just save yourself the trouble of doing it at all.

California makes good Zinfandel, and some of the more obscure old world grapes can sometimes be good.

stay the hell away from noble grapes grown in the state of California. at best you'll just get ripped off, at worst you'll end up with garbage.

petrus guy may be trolling but he has a point, California ruins wine.

My own question:

Anyone had any Ruffino Il Ducale? I want to get a bottle for Thanksgiving, and remember reading somewhere that Il Ducale is good for the fruity and heavy tastes of a Thanksgiving feast.

i used to work as a wine broker, the only people who buy that kind of bordeaux to drink nowadays are oligarchs and chinese billionaires who mix different bottles in ming vases then serve it like punch at parties

Because wine is an intimidating and inclusive sekrit cloob to those outside of it and.. it's the holidays?

it's a good mass market Chianti. it might be OK for turkey day but personally I'd go for a kabinett or spatlese Riesling

I never believed people when they said liking wine comes with age, but it's true, just carry on binging on the stuff until you don't find it revolting any more
until you like it, you'll also have halway enough knowledge about the stuff

decanting your wine using a blender takes 30 seconds instead of 30 minutes.
