Heyo, /ck/entlemen,

I'll fly to Los Angeles, California in february to visit my brother for 2 weeks. This will be my first time ever in the USandA, I'm german.

What do you guys suggest to try? My brother already recommends in'n'out.

Also what american supermarket items are worth a try?

I'm kinda against stuff like that, I don't own a microwave here, but if you say its good?

>> No.4944139

Honestly, In N Out is massively overhyped. It's a good burger in comparison to McDonalds but it's not great or exceptional. Just warning you so your expectations aren't high.

That said, I'm a pleb and like diner chains. Red Robin, Bj's, Chile's, Tommy's, Whataburger. I suggest you find yourself a good BBQ restaurant. You can get a good burger in your country, but you probably can't get good American BBQ.

Like BBQ, I think you should also find authentic Mexican restaurants. If you've never tried Mexican, then it's going to be pretty exotic for you. Must try Mexican dishes: tacos de asada (steak), tacos de adobada (spicy pork), tamales, mole (it's like curry), birria (goat or beef stew with a chile broth) and a California burrito.

Aside from Mexican, how about some American Chinese food? Maybe a buffet so you can see Americans stuffing themselves like pigs like you read about on the internet.

I don't know, sorry I can't recommend specific mom & pop restaurants, or fine dining - I'm not from LA.

Are you familiar with the website Yelp? Use Yelp to find places people like to eat at. Warning though, many of them will probably be tourist traps, with long lines.

It's not 'good'.
It IS the epitome of american fast food. In a sense.

I don't know of any particular LA specialties, but you might try finding a fancy hamburger place... or a cajun seafood restraunt. Those are perhaps the two most uniquely american styles of food I can think of.
Mexican food is also worth checking out, while you're on the continent.

Well, in Munich where I am right now there was only McDo and Burgerking for decades. In the last year some decent burger places evolved but you can count them on one hand (Ruffs Burger is the best, they bake their own bread in the morning and grind fresh meat). But as a bavarian real american burgers arent available so I guess every step up from McDo&Co is a real improvement.

BBQ, noted. What are diner chains exactly? Like in pulp fiction the jack rabbit slim's?

My brother has had a yelp-slave as a roommate, he said they found some decent places but it was always a little "forced" if you know what I mean.

Diner chains are like a combination of a fast food place and a sit down restaurant like you mentioned from pulp fiction. They're one step above fast food, but usually below a proper (usually privately owned) sit down restaurant. They're basically where you go to eat with friends or a girlfriend on a Friday/Saturday if you don't have a lot of money but want something better than fast food.

Nice, thanks. We don't really have that step between fast food and restaurants here in germany... There are restaurant chains, but they're either considered normal restaurants or fast food depending on what food at what price they're selling.

Good luck finding American food in LA. Los Angeles is not only all about misappropriating other cuisines but also ruining it beyond recognition by adding coriander leaf or mangos to it.
Example:
>fly to LA in 2003 to see a favourite band play
>stay with 'net friends who live there for a week
>they want to take me to this "great cajun place"
>coriander... coriander everywhere
>wtf are these yellow things in the jambalaya?
>mfw it's pickled mango

I'm not even American, but I love Americana. I think US cookery can be amongst the most unappreciated cuisines on earth. Los Angeles, however, just fucking ruins everything. So does SF.

I hate to reference Futurama, but when I saw that ep about how much LA sucks, I had a good strong giggle because everything they said was true.

That said, OP: just go to a deli. Delis are good there and won't have mango and coriander in places they don't belong. Proper KoJa food is good in LA, too. Chinese tends to be deplorable. Mexican is meh (it's better in NM, TX and AZ). Just be careful because every cook in LA tries to Southeast-Asianify everything with mango and fish sauce and coriander. Or Mexicanise with radishes, chilies and coriander.

Tinker with new meats, yes!
Play with the spices, ok!
Try adjusting the rice... maybe!

Fruit? Citrus?
... WHY... would you cut it with fruit acids?
Let alone PICKLED fruit. eugh

>> No.4944401

>citrus
I mentioned no citrus. It's just pickled mango. The jambalaya tasted more like the American dish "Spanish rice" than any jambalaya I've ever had. There was no tasso or andouille or anything remotely Louisianan in it. Just shrimp, chicken, chorizo, cajun trinity, sweet paprika, pickled mango and coriander leaf. And while I can't prove it was used in the dish, I'm convinced I could taste ketchup.

It wasn't bad once I began eating around the mango, but it wasn't good either. And it wasn't jambalaya. It was like a weirdo fried rice.

That tells me nothing. I don't believe you lived in Germany at all because if you did, you'd know that the cuisine varies immensely one region to the next.
While tea in general is enjoyed throughout Germany, for example, Friez/sen people in northwestern Germany drink metric fucktonnes of it and have developed a cuisine around tea. Friez/sen, who make up only about 2% of Germans drink about a fifth of all the tea consumed throughout the country.
In other parts of the country, steckrübeneintopf are made with heavy amounts of potato but Friez/sen omit them and make them with herbed drop dumplings, similar to some stews of the southern US. Herbs are in no short supply, but are highly regional so while one area may use parsley in any given dish, if the dish were to travel just a little ways down the road to the next region, the parsley will have been swapped out for dill, savoury, marjoram or lovage, for example, giving the dish a completely different taste.

If you find yourself in Little Tokyo, I'd suggest Daikokuya for Japanese ramen. You'll be able to spot it from all the people huddled outside the storefront - it's almost always crowded and you need to sign up on a waiting list for a seat (if you go with a small group it goes by fairly quickly).

There's also a little shop called Mitsuru Cafe that's famous for their imagawayaki (sort of like pancakes filled with red bean paste). Their takoyaki's pretty good too.

And there's a shabu shabu place that has some seriously good ponzu if you want to check that out too. I think the name is just Shabu Shabu Restaurant or something. The old guy who owns it looks like an octopus.

There should also be a legion of food trucks for just about everything you can think of. Kogi's a popular one; it's Korean/Mexican, but the lines are really long and it's seriously overpriced for the amount of food you get; I think it's like $3 for a street taco.

Anybody who puts down in-n-out is just wrong, OP. For the price, it is likely the best tasting burger around. And seriously, if you're in California, it is basically THE place to hit at least once.
If you want something a bit more upscale you can try Umami Burger. There is a few dotted around LA.
For Mexican food you have maaaany options. Here are a few good ones:
Alberto's mexican food joints are found everywhere. One thing that is really awesome they serve is 'Carne Asada fries' which is a plate full of fries topped with refried beans, grilled beef, guacamole, cheese, and cream. One of these orders is good for 2-3 people, or one if you want to feel like dying.
If you want some good, cheap, filling tacos there is King Taco. It is basically a franchised taco place and, honestly, it's fucking delicious. Everybody loves it. The RED hot sauce is really spicy but has an amazing flavor. One of the defining things of king taco, imo. King Taco is generally located in pretty ghetto spots, but the one in Pico Rivera is decent for sure, and it's right off the freeway.
There is also El Taurino, which I have not tried but i hear is damn good. A favorite spot for drunk youngsters on weekends to sober up with some spicy tacos. Located in the heart of Downtown.

ALSO
You must hit up the Farmer's Market on 3rd and Fairfax. It is right next to The Grove which is an awesome place to visit, and it's not rare to see a celebrity there. There is also a few museums by there, like LACMA and the Petersen Auto Museum.
The Farmer's Market is a quaint little spot with many stand-like shops and food vendors. The Cajun place and the Brazilian BBQ are my favorite, and the Donut shop serve probably the best Donuts in LA. Speaking of Donuts, you might have seen 'Randy's donuts' in a few movies and you can visit too. I've driven by many times on my way to school, but never stopped by. it's right off the 405, but it's in the heart of one of LA's meanest ghettos. I will post a few more if you'd like

I can definitely recommend Wurstkuche, despite the fact its one of the biggest hipster magnets. They have exotic hot dogs made, like duck, or rattlesnack and rabbit, with a wide variety of toppings, and sauces for their delicious fries.
Phillipe's, right by union station, honestly i wouldn't recommend it. It's a tourist trap, imo. Like literally full of tourists, and you can tell by the prices. The actual food is okay, but with the prices and the wait, not worth it imo.
Pinks hot dogs is alright. I once saw them take mushrooms out of a can, for what its worth.

If you like onions at all, make sure you order your burger at in-n-out with grilled onions
If you like sea food at all, Ceviche will be like heaven to you. It is shrimp cooked for hours in lime, and then drained and served with fresh veggies like tomato, cucumber, onion, cilantro and other stuff. Or you can try a coctel, which is sort of a cold tomato-based soup of cooked shrimp.
If you feel like Sea Food, hit up San Pedro pier. Countless seafood joints, and with tables on a dock right by the sea.
Though the best ceviche i have ever tried that was not home made was from El Perihuete in Paramount. I can almost guarantee if you are some white German dude, you will likely get stares. You can order to-go, or if you have a hispanic friend it might make it less weird, but it shouldn't be terrible even if you don't. Paramount is a decent town. Ceviche is a really awesome dish especially when its hot out or you are hungover(seriously), and it's mid-nov but I am sitting in my room in shorts with the fan on.
I haven't had a chance to try all the Italian and pizza places, so maybe some body can help out there as I am sure there are many great spots.

I indeed am a white german guy but I like to think I'm good with new people and places. Ceviche sounds awesome, I'm near the alps right now so decent seafood isn't a priority where I live but I love it!

You should have no problems at all.
That's great, you will love the seafood. Ceviche really is awesome. It is probably my favorite dish. Do a google image search of "San Pedro Pier Seafood" but be warned you might get really hungry lol. I know I just did.
