My local liquor store had Knob Creek come in and have them sample 3 different barrels. They selected one and it was then bottled and shipped to the store. They even have the exact barrel setup as a display, pretty neat.

Went to a beer festival tonight and drank a good variety. All good stuff except for one. Can't remember what it's called but if you ever come across an English 10.5 abv stout for gods sake don't drink it. It tastes like cheap port. It's not even beer. Also they were out of Rochefort 10 (sp) so I had the 8 which tasted like piss and put me off Trappist forever. Please someone tell me they do better than that. They're supposed to be the best ever. That was a slight step above the best lager i've tried.

Nah, I totally agree bro. I came across as pretentious but trust me, I'm really not a pretentious person. I'll enjoy the hell out of some cheap beer if I'm broke or if its offered to me. And I'm not having long one sided conversations about craft brew with people that don't drink it, I just leave it at what I said and switch the convo to talking about fun crazy shit thats happened while drinking. If they actually show interest in the stuff I'll give a recommendation.

I actually had a coworker come up to me a couple weeks ago and was like "ey man, you're into those fancy beers, right?" I said yea, whatya need? He asked me how Guinness was, he'd heard it was really good but he doesn't drink stuff like that and its expensive. I explained that it wasn't anything like the beer he was used to having, its black, milky, and almost has a chocolate or coffee flavor. Dude ended up getting some for the weekend and told me on Monday that he loved the taste but he didn't like how it felt in his mouth, it was too weird feeling. Told the dude about the nitrogen capsule inside and how it made a completely different carbonation than normal, and recommended the extra stout because same flavor but normal carbonation.

Anyway, he loved the extra stout and its his go to beer now. And a huge improvement IMO. I haven't pushed anything else on the dude, when he's ready he'll ask and I'm glad he likes it. Shit Guinness was highest tier for me until a couple years ago.

I was always drinking. I found I had difficulty keeping my place clean, myself properly. I couldn't think right.

It's not that Vodka shouldn't have a taste, it's going to have some taste. It's just that a good Vodka is where you cannot taste or barely taste the Ethanol in the Vodka thereby ensuring a "clean" taste and then whatever herbs, spices or fruits if any added to the Vodka accentuates the overall product. Opposite for me. I have an incredibly severe case of OCD anxiety. I've been in therapy for years and it has greatly improved in that time. But none of the SSRIs they use to treat it work. I cope with it by going to the occasional therapy session when I'm back in my hometown. Alcohol is the only thing that frees me from the god-awful disaster that is my mind. Even with just a few shots of vodka over the span of the night, I suddenly am free of my anguish. I don't worry about things. I'm happy. I'm able to go places without the crippling fear my brain imposes on me when I try to do my normal day-to-day routine. I'm free of everything.

Unfortunately, I know how bad the booze is for me, and my rigorous work schedule prohibits me from being able to drink. I rarely get the chance to drink as a result. My life really is hell.

Just be careful with it. I had horrible social anxiety and started drinking in or before social settings. It really helped me come out of my shell and I made some friends and got laid, thanks to the booze. I've been drinking pretty much daily for five years now and it doesn't work the same way. These days I do better around people when I'm completely sober, possibly thanks to the confidence boost and social experience I got from my early drinking days. Constant repeat distillation increases the Ethanol content of vodka. Some manufacturers won't repeat this and ensure a lower ethanol content then filter it through various things like charcoal or quartz to ensure its clean taste and then there's a dilution if needed with water. Ethanol is a chemical, with a specific chemical taste. You can test this by diluting pure ethanol with distilled water.

You cannot filter out ethanol's taste without filtering out the ethanol itself. What you are filtering out is the substances originally used to make the ethanol.

Overly filtered vodka is nothing more than ethanol and water. I dont really consider something i could literally mix up in a laboratory a good drink. Maybe a good paint-thinner.

google for a more in depth response but basically whisky and whiskey are two different spellings of the same word (US and UK iirc), and whisky is grain-derived while bourbon is corn-derived (bourbon also has some specific rules like... must be a certain abv, made in a certain state/county... ???? other stuff probably)

i'm drinking bulleit 10 yr atm. it's ok. very sharp, clean, rounded a bit at the edges. for the price i'd probably pick up regular bulleit. i like how bright and 'sunny' it is.

Not the anon you replied to but the one whose comment is above yours. I like it much more than regular Jack. At first it tastes like regular then quickly honey. While it may be a little sweet, I don't find it sickly sweet or a bad drink to get drunk off like some other flavored alcohols. Also I find it much smoother than ordinary Jack Daniels. That being said I am also a liquor noob, as stated in my post above yours. I would recommend/10 everyone I have drank it with has enjoyed it. Some saying its there new favorite drink.

The default babby's first real gin is Hendricks. Try that, go crazy and tell everyone that what they drink is garbage. Get it out of your system and then start exploring other styles when you get bored.

It's basically the gin equivalent of imperial stout. Not that it tastes anything like it, but it's different enough from "pleb shit" that it should stoke your interest and give you temporary euphoria that you may even want to shitpost about on /ck/.

My favorite all around gins are Old Raj and Junipero, but try Hendrick's first. I recommend trying it in a Fever Tree tonic with chopped or sliced cucumbers.
