Why are french fries such a popular side item for Americans? I swear every single fast food place I've seen offers it out, for every meal too

Because potatoes are cheap, fast food places are cheap and even the pickiest of children will eat them.

Fried potatoes are ubiquitous in spanish restaurants too. At every mom and pop home cooking lunchtime worker menus which make up about 70% of Spanish meals outside of home you always get fries, never mash, very rarely rice and roast or baked potatoes are unheard of.

Why do you eat fast food? In general it's far too caloric and it is low quality. I love potatoes and yes some french fries are delicious but I rarely eat them because I don't often eat food deep fried in oil or go to fast food restaurants.
