Hey /ck/, does alcohol fall under your board?

I'm looking for some good Scotch, but I don't have a whole lot to spend searching around and trying different expensive types. Ideally something less than $100 a bottle. Is there anything you guys can recommend in that range that would be enjoyable?

$100 is a pretty good bottle. Why are you buying it? For someone else, for yourself, for a party? What do you like? Smoke, peat, medicinal taste, what?

Edradour has some nice ones. They are a relatively small distillery, and oddly enough they have chosen to make small batches using a variety of casks as well. Very flavorful Highland scotches. If you find one you especially like, better buy a bunch of bottles at once, because their runs are typically around 300 bottles or so and you'll never get an exact match again. Prices (Illinois) were running around $80 to $100 per bottle last time I looked.

Laphroaig has some nice unchillfiltered runs, not sure if they are currently releasing one though. (They stopped the third run a few months ago.) #3 was around $60/bottle and was excellent (extremely smoky). If you can find one now, I'd be interested in what the price is.

Just for myself. As far as what I like, I don't really know yet...I guess that makes it sort of difficult to get a recommendation. I'm just trying to experiment and see what I'd like, but I'm trying not to do it with cheap Scotches that will taste bad no matter what.

I got a bottle of Talisker recently and it wasn't too bad.

if you haven't finished at least 3 bottles of scotch in your life you should probably get some laphroaig and drink it recklessly. Get your brain used to the phenols in the alcohol so you can start tasting everything else.

Scotch lasts like ink toner to most people until they drink enough of it.

You might like this one, it was the first I ever tried on a suggestion from a friend at work. It doesn't have that killer pete taste that some do.

I prefer Bourbon and The Irish, that said The Glenlivet is respectable IMO.

It's nowhere near $100, might as well splurge and get the 18 yr old or more.

Laphroaig is a great whisky but it is not a session drink, if I drink anymore then two nips in an evening it starts to become a bit sickly.
I have been really drunk on it before, the cask strength Laphroaig to be precise and the next morning was horrible, that smell doesn't leave your breath, you can even smell that peat coming out of your pores in your sweat.
I love the stuff but man that hangover was awful.

I recommend Glenmorangie for a good first choice and a must try for any whisky drinker.

I fucking love this stuff, it is nectar of the gods.

Opening the lid and you can smell the iodine saltiness of the atlantic ocean, it puts me on craggy rocks on a stormy night; never had a drink evoke such powerful feelings as this one.

It'll be horribly overwhelming if you've never tried a smokey single malt before, but midway through your first glass you'll realize and will never turn back.

I still keep my last empty bottle to open and smell occasionally, I'll need to get another one soon. I've lived in Ireland up until last year when I moved to Scotland, tried basically every big whisky without a ridiculous price tag and lagavulin is the one for me.

Any proper Scotch connoisseurs here?
I love my Islays but I want to expand my experience a little. What should I try next? I am not a fan of the pussy weak lowland stuff, or sherry/oak gimmicks so no Macallan which does both otherwise i'm open to ideas. aside from Islays I have really enjoyed Talisker 10 and Springbank 10. 10 is usually my budget unless I splash out for Lagavulin 16, the nectar of gods.

If it helps order of preference is Lagvulin 10>Laphroaig Quarter Cask>Laphroaig 10»Ardbeg 10.

That's not entirely true. At least a quarter are pretentious cunts who pretend to drink only Lagvulin 16. Nobody can afford to be an alcoholic on that unless they're multimillionaires.

I'm kinda an alcoholic in that when I start I find it hard to stop, but I don't drink all the time and can go weeks without drinking. Don't really know what that's called. These are my favorite threads on /ck/.

My first scotch was a Balvenie Doublewood. I was hooked immediately, so smooth and a bit sweet thanks to the sherry barrel. Everyone raves about Islay scotches so I went with a Laphroaig 10 year. Didnt like it at first but definitely grew on me. I tried some with a cigar and was amazed and how different the Laphroaig tasted. Not sure what to try next...debating between McCallan or Lagavulin.

>sherry/oak gimmicks
Sherry aging has been going on for a really long time, it's hardly a gimmick.

Personally I like peaty holy-fuck Islays and stuff like Highlands and Speysides about equally, and usually have a bottle or two of each type open so I can drink what I feel like. If you're looking for a peaty scotch though, there's definitely a few I could suggest. Aged Laphroaigs imo get a lot smoother and more complex, but they can be expensive. Ardbeg Uigeadail is one I often suggest, but it's aged in sherry casks so if that's not your thing don't bother with it (same deal with Lagavulin Distiller's Edition). Two of my favorite Islays recently have been Caol Ila cask strength and Talisker 57º North; both are cask strength which is a huge plus with any whisk(e)y but especially with an Islay.

I wouldn't go for Macallan, it's way overpriced IMO. If you want to try a good sherried whisky I'd suggest Glendronach 15 revival, Glenfarclas 15 (or older, Glenfarclas ages really well so basically the older the better), or Aberlour A'bunadh, which is cask strength. Something it sounds like you'd really like though (judging by the two you're debating between) is Lagavulin distiller's edition, which is a bottling of Lagavulin that's extra matured in sherry casks. Ardbeg Uigeadail is similar but I find the Lagavulin to be better balanced and generally nicer.

There's just no way, there's such a fucking gulf in terms of quality it's not even funny. Like most things the 'get what you pay for' factor starts to fall off at really high prices where you start paying more for prestige/rarity than actual quality, but for 99% of spirits price actually relates pretty well with quality, barring a few exceptions.
