>> No.4874299

Primary influence on American culture was English, where we picked up English love of sweets. Slave trade insured we had molasses from the Caribbean. Natural history gave us Maple syrup in the north.
Without much in the way of seasonings we ended up sweetening our beans because onions and fatback were the only other things we had to season them with.

Then the next major cultural influence on American culture was German immigrants. Germans have always loved sweet and savory combinations. Stuff like pork roasted with apples. We had plenty of apples, so those kind of combinations made it into American cooking.

With the advent of mass produced candy sweets went from being a treat to an everyday thing. Then Prohibition came, and the soda shop, featuring always popular sweet drinks and ice cream replaced the bar/pub, reinforcing the idea of sweets as everyday things.

By the time the 80's came along America's sweet tooth was well established. But cheap corn syrup suddenly allowed everything to be sweet. So pretty much everything became sweet.

>> No.4874305

>>4874299
You're forgetting the part where we gradually began to re-separate and reapproach those foods resulting in thousands of English or German restaurants that don't serve a single sweet item outside of some optional and rarely ordered dessert item. I've been to thousands of dinners and unless it's complimentary no one orders dessert unless it's an occasional tiramisu that's one portion shared by 8 people.

Seriously, outside of beverages the idea that the average American is obsessed with sweets is overblown.

Disagree. It might not be so overt as OP's pic, but many things are sweetened in America that would not be sweetened in other places. Much of our bread is sweetened. Our salad dressings are sweetened. BBQ sauce is loaded with sugar, as are other sauces we put on our meat. Products that would rarely be sweetened in other countries (pasta sauces, canned soups, savory snack foods) line our supermarket shelves here in sweetened form.

Then when it comes to actual desserts Americans have an uneasy relationship. We tend to feel guilt about them, yet still overindulge.

Because for generations American food has been something of a laughingstock in the world. Ketchup on everything, cheese on everything, drinking milk with meals, casseroles made with cream of mushroom soup, ranch dressing, fast food, cakes made from boxed mixes, breakfast cereal...

In spite of the fact that some of the best restaurants in the world are in America many Americans are still defensive because they still eat the kind of shit we've been traditionally made fun of for eating (and like it)..

Maybe. Or maybe they like making sport of the excessive chest thumping American indignity so easily churned up in a certain stripe of American by even the slightest mockery of our foibles. (Ketchup and ranch dressing are pretty fucking funny table condiments). Why are we so touchy about it? Because in America having highfalutin taste is looked down upon. It has never been normal nor fine, in places where pizza has been defined by Italians, Italian immigrants or their children. But this sort of thing happens when the popularity of a dish goes beyond the people who created it. Like ceviche, curry and sushi, pizza has gone around the world, transforming into many things traditionalists would find disgusting. Yet those not based in tradition may find those forms wonderful.

It's an easy argument, but at some point it becomes apples and oranges, because a chain pizza with ham, bacon and pineapple bears little resemblance to a Neapolitan pizza. They're really different things.
