Hey, /ck/. I'm poor but I love to cook. I need to go grocery shopping and honestly I'm not really sure what to get to last me for a while. Lets have a thread for people like me that are just now starting to go out and grocery shop.
I've been living off of meals from the dining facility they have on base and I can't do it anymore.

rice, lentils, beans, hot dogs, eggs, peanut butter

my grocery list for the past 1.5 years

onions
rice
lentils

all you really need to survive, and it's roughly cheaper than ramen

So, lets say I have around $150 to spend. I should buy mass amounts of lentils, rice, onions, and eggs?

I would save some money for occasional green vegetables and fresh fruit. Also garlic in addition to onions. Otherwise sounds good.

If you have an Indian supermarket nearby you should get your brown rice and lentils there.

If not, but you have a whole foods nearby, you can likely get bulk brown rice and bulk quinoa for cheaper than what the pre-packaged variety would cost at a non-Asian store.

I can buy some new stuff every once in a while. For the most part, I'm looking to buy the staples. I just don't know what's reasonable.

the whole ethnic shopping thing to save money doesn't always work. Ethnic prices on meats usually can't beat the good specials from low-tier big chains. It's the same for many other items, ethnic stores usually don't have very good specials although their regular prices are usually better

In Montreal, I get my rice usually from low tier big chains (superC and maxi) when it's on special and it's even cheaper than in chink and paki stores. Same with the meats.
Chickpeas on the other hand I get it from this persian store that sells 10lbs bags at 9 bucks, but for kidney beans, their hsit is like 12$ for 10lbs... I'd rather go to this jewish ghettolike store in the hipster hood that sells it by the lbs. They raised the prices recently, most beans are at 1.29CAD per lb but romano beans and black beans remain at 99c

Chicken too, that's why I only buy from local farmers.

OP here. Just got back from the store. With $111 I got enough to last me for almost a month. Also picked up some ground beef and shelf stable milk. The milk is a lot cheaper than buying it by a gallon.

the only time I use milk is in baking and that is the ONLY acceptable use for 'shelf stable' milk.
It makes god-tier cinnamon rolls.

Lol I don't mind drinking it like normal milk.

There's powdered milk, too, if you ever want to try that.
