Sup al/ck/oholics, bout to go shopping to stock up my bar. Name the best alcohol that can be had for ±20 USD in each of the following catagories:

Clear rum
Vodka
Tequila
Gin
whiskey
bourbon

Bottles should ideally be good enough to drink straight but also able to be mixed without causing too much of an uproar from purists.

Oh, and no local shit. These should be widely available bottles.

Home bar general I guess.

>> No.4847006

just stick to the last two on your list. Or get dark rum. Grain neutral spirits are only for mixing.

>> No.4847012

And just to get yall going, here's what I have so far

> Vodka
Sky or absolute (I think most vodka tastes the same, but I like the color of the skyy bottle.)

> Gin
tanqueray (sp?)

>Whiskey
Probably JD

>all others,
no idea

>>4847006
I agree, they probably won't get used much but I think it would look pretty empty w/o them.

Vodka - Give Stolichnaya a try, it's a quality liquor made with a more traditionalist approach than Absolut.

Gin - Tanqueray is great for it's price range, I pull out a big handle whenever I have people over. Keep a bottle of Hendrick's in your freezer for solo consumption.

Whiskey - Jack Daniels is over-spiced, and although it has a unique flavour, does not represent the wonderful godsend that is bourbon. Try Bulleit. As far as rye is concerned, Wild Turkey's the only decent bottle you'll get for cheap. Again, have a side bottle of Van Winkle set aside for special occasions or smaller gatherings. I'm not a big fan of Scotch, and certainly not a purist when it comes to blending. I enjoy Balvenie, though some varieties are better than others (avoid the rum-cask aged Scotch).

Rum - It's all the same, go with a Bacardi or similar. You'll also want a dark rum, I recommend Appleton Estate, although Cruzan is also good.

And to round out your list, you'll need a silver and gold tequila. As it's unaged, the price of the silver doesn't make too much of a difference in quality, I buy 1800 as it's cheap. For the gold, spend a little extra money. This'll be a special occasion bottle, for sipping. You'll want an anejo or extra-anejo, depending on how manly you are. I recommend Arete or Don Fulano. These are relatively expensive, but if you're buying aged tequila, it's worth doing it right.

A.N. Chocolate Patron is great in coffee.

>Vodka
If you can find these, get Reyka or American Harvest. Belvedere is also very good. Grey Goose is overrated. The ladies go nuts for 44 North Huckleberry, and it's actually damn good.

>Tequila
I'm not a big tequila drinker, but Lunazul is 100% agave and cheap

>Gin
Tanqueray or Boodles

On a side note, New Amsterdam makes really good Gin/Vodka and it's relatively cheap. Great for parties or drinkers on a budget.

You ignant.

Go for Mount Gay rum, OP. Same price as Bacardi and much higher quality.

OP here, probably should have given this thread more than 5 minutes before running to the store. Anyway, here's the haul. 96USD total, about 40USD if you're just counting the liquor.

Bar setup. I realize now I'll need at least twice as many bottles to fill it up.

>> No.4847225

Hit a rough patch and i'm drinking pleb tier stuff tonight. Captain Morgan's spiced rum. If you like vanilla flavouring you will love this stuff. Lagvulin 16 it is not but honestly for the price I can't complain. It's pretty smooth. But yeah you're going to want to like vanilla they should probably say vanilla flavoured rum rather than spiced.

Drinking it with coke at the moment. I suspect it has to be done but i'll try a little neat in a bit and get back to you. Bought a litre for £17 which is about the best you're going to find drinkable stuff here for.

>> No.4847231

Speyburn 10. Highland, single malt Scotch. $20 for 750ml. Smooth, nice finish. I usually drink neat or on the rocks, but makes a decent hot toddy.

I don't think you can beat CM spiced for a a "nice tasting" getting drunk spirit. It's simple and the vanilla notes are a little overpowering but it actually tastes nice whereas cheap vodka or whisky with coke does not.

Do yourself a massive favour and save up $40-50 for Scotch. The leap in quality is insane. If you really want something in the meantime Glenfiddich 12 is drinkable at a push and often on offer.

Save up for ages to buy a nice bottle of Scotch
My local specialist whisky store is out of Laphroaig Quarter Cask, so I say go on then i'll stretch to a Lagvulin 16. They don't have that either. Fine Laphroaig 10 then. Nope.
Well fuck you. I like to try and support the store because although it's expensive they've always been good but fuck that i'm going online and getting it far cheaper. You've got to keep the basics in.

It's all marketing really. There isn't a vodka that tastes "good" If you get a very very good vodka you get a drink that tastes like nothing with a slight alcoholic bite. Why would you do that when you can get a rum, scotch, brandy or bourbon that tastes of actual attractive flavours?

Vodka is a means to getting drunk or an ingredient in cocktails, nothing else.
But yeah if you do insist on vodka for fucks sake don't buy an American brand. I have Russian Standard in for my cocktail collection. Which is significantly better than Smirnoff without being Grey Goose retarded hype priced.

For vodka, if you can find Tito's Handmade then I highly recommend it. It's made in Texas, but I've been able to find it pretty widespread across the Western US.
Otherwise, Stoli or Svedka are acceptable.

For gin, I would go with Bombay Sapphire (if that's in your price range) because I prefer it to Tanqueray, but that's just my opinion. Beefeater and Hendrick's are two other good options.

For rum, Sailor Jerry is good but it's a spiced rum. If you're looking for a clear one all I can vouch for is Bacardi. It's alright, I guess
