legit, is MSG bad for you? i'm about to go to the oriental market to get some 5 spice, but i'm also considering getting msg just because.

>> No.4821138

No, except you should limit it in the same manner as salt if you have hypertension.

>> No.4821137

Are you retarded?
Everyone knows MSG gives you Headaches and can in some cases even lead to cancer.

That's how you know it's bullshit. MSG does neither of those things.

It's got a high sodium content (since that's what it mostly is) which is bad news for people with hypertension or who have or are prone to heart disease.
Then again, that's the same as for salt. If you treat it the same as that, you'll probably be fine if you eat a balanced diet and exercise.

Hmm, well I don't plan on using it often; maybe only for ethnic cuisines (filipino, indian, thai, chinese). Would a little pinch go a long way in replacement of salt?

just get it. it's glorious. like injecting that "cooked with beef" flavor into everything.

MSG is no worse for you than salt.

>> No.4821197

I buy MSG shakers in bulk and put that shit on everything.

Like anything, some people are more sensitive to it than others. It doesn't do a damn thing to be, while others practically go into full alergic shock. Some others just get a headache.

Nothing bad about it itself, just depends on the person. like HFCS.

I never understood what the big deal about MSG was.

Then again some people treat carbs like it is poison.

>> No.4821205

There's no scientific evidence of it doing jack shit. Soccer moms will just believe what talk show hosts say and treat it like it's poison because "better safe than sorry".

MSG, like everything that's fucking good in this world, is good as long as you don't abuse it.

A pinch of it improves any savory dish a whole lot.

If you're using other ingredients that already have MSG (certain brands of premade stocks, broth cubes, etc, etc), just skip on adding MSG and salt for that matter.

It's only bad if you're allergic to it. If you've never experienced any symptoms after eating cheap Chinese takeout then you'll be fine.

And then companies starting using ingredients like autolyzed yeast extract, which is basically like using evaporated cane juice instead of sugar. It's the same shit, but you make it sound like something vaguely natural.

Guys, soy sauce is a natural source of msg.
It's been eaten as a condiment for thousands of years, use that instead, it's like 3 buck a bottle.

treat it EXACTLY as you would salt.

Listen man, there's a difference between bound and unbound. free glutamic acid verses glutamic acid. that shit messed me up. seriously, tachycardias and shit.

as long as you learn the difference, you're golden. also, half the population doesn't have reaction to it, so test going without and see how you feel.

involves lots of research.

It won't kill you. Even if it did shorten your lifespan by a few years if you eat it every day, who cares?

If you're worried about it, just use salt, soy sauce, etc. You really don't need msg for anything.

MSG exists naturally in chicken, so it's not so bad. But I don't ever eat straight msg. I'm fine with foods that contain it though like chips or ramen.
