Hello, /ck/.
A roommate recently got himself a knife, pic attached. Supposedly very superior, very expensive, he got it somehow through back door in a promotion of a local network of grocery shops. He spent quite a while deciding which to pick, because the promotion offered 4 different; he decided he has a chef knife and isn't interested in 2 others, he picked this one. He read the description out loud to me - the grooves in the blade are to keep vegetables from sticking, which allows for faster chopping.

Well, I've been using it recently (I'm the main cook here, he hardly ever uses his stuff. I was to chop some potatoes, peeled already.

>Potato on board.
>Chop in half.
>Try to shake the half that stuck to the blade off.
> Try to push the half that stuck off.
> Grip it and pull with force, watching not to cut myself. Nothing.
> Press the knife against cutting board, use my full weight on the potato.

*Smock* - the potato detached.

The little grooves act as suction cups, and bigger, firmer vegetables like potatoes or firm apples stick so hard they are really hard to detach.

That's a $20 knife made of no-name stainless steel. The reason those grooves are not working is the blade is too thin for them to be legitimately deep enough to work.

Be nice to your roommate but just so you know, it's a piece of junk.

What about stuff like peppers and whatnot?
Im curious because i saw a knife like that and was thinking of getting its for 20 U.S.A dollarodoos

That's a twenty pound cheap Santoku

That one sucks, the steak knives have been ok for me. Got them through a contest deal too

It works fine, it's sharp and heavy enough for nice handling and the blade goes low enough that you have enough room between the grip and the board, no need to hang it over the edge. The "non-sticking" feature simply doesn't work though.

>> No.4762034

By the way, the brand(ing?) of that particular knife is "Thomas". Is that any known brand or just another "Panasonix?"

>> No.4762044

Oh, and you can get it outside the promotion for something like $41, but this being a backwater country, $41 isn't the same as in the USA.

Weird, got this exact same knife in a similar sounding giveaway in Tesco stores in the UK. Mainly just sits in a draw as a spare.

>ugly, useless non-sharpened section of blade at the handward end of the blade
Why do people do this? It makes the blade a pain in the arse to sharpen. Is it to protect your fragile fairy hands from the horrible pain of touching a slightly narrower edge? It looks like shit, too.

Probably makes it harder for retards to break. Same reason why so many knives aren't hardened adequately. Retards think that if a knife snaps from hammering on it with a hammer or using it as a pry bar, that it's not a good knife. These things end up on the internet and a brand's reputation is ruined.

Better just to build everything for stupid people at the expense of having the product be good at the actual task it's allegedly designed for.

Do you mean the chunky bit just where the blade starts after the handle? Isn't that used for breaking small bones or whatever?

if you hone your knife everyday, not abuse it, take it to a professional sharpener twice a year: it will be just as good as a thousand dollar knife (assuming that you are a homecook who just uses the knife for less than an hour everyday)

They were doing that promo around here, too. It's some no-name newcomer trying to break into the market with an MSRP of like $30, it's made in China, and even then you're mostly paying for the one-piece stainless handle looks. It's a WalMart-tier knife with an appealingly shiny handle.

That's because granton edge is a fucking marketing gimmick that appeals to bored hosewives watching Rachel Ray. It's usually paired with a santoku because the santoku is another marketing gimmick that appeals to bored housewives watching Rachel Ray.

The only granton edge I've ever seen do a bit of good is the Glestain one as here >>4761962

It seems like the problem of suction could be more easily circumvented by a slight flange in the blade. There really shouldn't be much trouble with suction regardless, as long as you're cutting at a decent speed, but grooves seem like an inconsistent way to prevent it.

Not really. Friend's got a friend at that network of shops. The knife is for points - stickers you receive for purchases. You need some ridiculous amount to get the knife, like $500 in purchases (at corner grocery type store!) so people just don't bother and don't pick their points - then it's easy to collect 120 stickers for the shop crew while one purchase is 1-5 stickers usually. Except they are "not eligible to participate in the promotion" and would get in trouble if they tried. Result: their friends get these knives free.
