Pane cafone (literally "peasant's bread"), a long-fermented, no-knead sourdough.

It's called "peasant's bread" because the ingredients, flour, water and salt, are affordable to everyone. ItaloAmericans mispronounce "cafone" (kah-foh-neh) as "gavone" (g'vōn) and use it as a general insult for one another because they detest being reminded they came from smelly, unwashed, dark-and-greasy low-class, peasant stock. Really, I doubt any of them know what the word means. They just use it as a general insult in the same way 'cunt' is used in Australia and the UK and 'hipster' on /ck/.
