In the US , parties of six or more are generally charged gratuity.
Corporate accounts are also charged gratuity. Whenever I've eaten on the company dime at some restaurant with whom they've an account, there's always a gratuity. Always. It's 18%, though, not 20%.

Since this cheque was for six diners, the gratuity comes into play.

Larger parties with reservations are generally given to the better servers so that gratuity wouldn't be for nought.

Agreed, but that's normal for restaurants and bars. Alcohol is always marked up a crazy amount. Same for sodas, for that matter. It only costs a few cents to make a cup of soda with a fountain. Even the average joe can walk into a Wal-Mart or Sam's and buy name-brand sodas for less than 50 cents a can. Much less at a "wholesale store" like Sam's Club or Costco. Yet even a "cheap" restaurant will charge $1.50 or $2.00, often much more.

The service was absolutely excellent and I tipped 25%ish. When servers go above and beyond I will shove wads of money down their throat until they cum in their pants. On the other hand I will leave fucking nothing if anything a server disappoints me in any way at all. If they're average then they get 20%ish. The restaurant was Roy's in Chicago. One of those "asian fusion" places. Excellent seafood. Would recommend.

For about 6 years, I was a manager of a medium sized retail store. One year we had a particularly great year, revenue-wise, and I had a very hefty bonus that I was going to get after the end of the year (somewhere in the range of 3500 dollars, IIRC)

I decided to treat all of my employees to a nice Christmas dinner out at my favorite Italian restaurant (a little family-owned place down the street from me), to thank them for all the hard work. It was about 10 people. We ended up doing a standardized menu (basically salad, stuffed shrimp and stuffed mushroom appetizers, choice of chicken/beef/fish entree, which came with a plate of pasta)

So, for all 10 people, plus beverages it came to a little over 300 dollars. I tipped 50 dollars which was kind of generous, but the service was really good, and it was Christmas after all.

The best part about it was that I kept the receipts, and ended up expensing the meal as an 'Employee Function', so I got all the money back.

MoneyedAnon here. Well... sort of. My parents and family earn far more than I do. I don't even earn six figures, but I grew up with something of a priviledged upbringing.

That sort of behaviour is really rather gauche, something done by new money who've no proper understanding of social grace nor how vulgar such displays actually are.
Awful, really. I've noticed, also, how miserly new money is when it comes to charity/donation and tipping. While old money may be difficult to pinpoint on mere glance, you can /always/ tell new money within seconds of them catching your gaze. They're the ones that are demanding, rude and flaunting cash in the most vulgar possible manners imaginable. They 've no grooming in how to treat others nor how to behave with grace and tact — brats.

As a child, my mother insisted that we kept after ourselves and cleaned as we played, putting toys and games away in their place when we're finished with them, keeping our rooms and play areas in order and setting our beds daily. "The help works for me, not for you," she'd say, telling us that her mother told her and her siblings the same when she was a child. I believe this taught us some measure of responsibilty that new money completely rejects in instilling in their children.

I've friends of many social class backgrounds, but none that are new money. They're simply repugnant.

when i was younger (about 10-11) i would deliver for my dads restaraunt. he owned a restaraunt in the bottom of a 40 story apartment complex, so all i did was take the bag of food to the elevator, go up, and ring the door. everything was to the nearest dollar, so it was easy to do.
>mfw cute ass girls would give me $5 tips on a $3 order because i was "so cute"
>mfw bros would give me $5-10 tips because i was "a hustler"
>mfw a businessman tipped me $20 on a $2 order of fries because i was a "young entrepreneur"
i didnt understand much, all i knew was i was getting money to blow at haunted trails, a stereo, a tv, etc.
it was really fun

Most I've ever paid for a single meal was somewhere in the region of $220 for me and my date, at an high-end steak place.

My date paid the tip, it would have been whatever the going rate was at the time — 12.5% maybe?

far and away the most money I've spent at a restaurant was for my best bros bachelor party. I don't even remember how much it cost - I just remember wincing intermittently on the way home just thinking about it.
