How did they go from hipster 3rd choice burger joint when Whataburger and McDonald's aren't there to being quality burgers/fries that's worth the 2 extra bucks

>> No.4688123

>>4688121

Wendy's has been #1 FF burger joint for me (by a wide margin) since, like, 1994

I dunno wtf Wendy's you guys are going to. There's four in my town, all equally eh. If you get the food fresh (rare) it's good but otherwise you're pretty much guaranteed a heat lamp dried meal. Their chili & frosties have been decent since at least the mid seventies. McD & BK just keep nicking one another's menus (last major innovation: chicken nuggets), rather than offer anything slightly different like baked potatoes, chili, or a salad bar. Newer contenders omit even the slightest variety, sticking to burgers, fries, shakes and soft drinks.

I don't thin it's "old" burger meat. MY cousin worked there and said they had a system for cooking burgers. You've got three going at all times; one that's ready to eat, one that's halfway done, and one that's just been put on the grill. If the ready-to-eat burger gets too well done they just toss it in a bin and use it to make the chili. It actually sounds better to me than chili meat that comes frozen in a block of tomato sauce.

They were always my favorite of the big 3 back in the 90s and early 00s due to the 99 cent menu and their chili/Frosty selections, and also how their fries were thick and had heft to them. I'm pretty sure I've never, ever had anything from their regular menu except for the rare Spicy Chicken.

It's still wonderful.

Wendy's had that appeal in the era that you're talking about. I mean, what is the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger? Mostly poor stoners and high school kids and college kids used to crowd the Wendy’s that I used to go as a young, nitwitted college freshman. It’s almost like yesterday…

The purple plumes of the night sky and her cadre of clouds crowd the skyline. I'm drunk now. It's 2005. The Wendy’s dining room chokes on the odor of cloying patchouli, Burberry Touch, & a spicy amalgamation of tobacco and marijuana all overwhelmed by the smell of cheap beer—Natty, Beast, Pabst—pick your poison. Despite it being 3 AM, the dining room and walk-up window are still open. The line caterpillars out the door, angling onto the sidewalk and down the street. The crisp, Autumn air portends the wintry chill about to come. This is the last night I will ever eat with Krista before she leaves. The last time we ever talk. We hold hands as I become fascinated with the young hippy’s hemp beanie in front me. The thick twines of red, green, and yellow transform his head into the interior room of a casement window adorned with a Rasta curtain. It’s time to order. The meal’s six and some change. It’s cold now. There’s no room inside to sit and eat, so we elect to sit outside on a closed bar’s patio. Food’s hot, and fresh. Filling. I clasp her hand after holding onto my drink for an extended period of time to simulate what a corpse’s hand must feel like. She shrieks. As a sign of outward remorse, I give her my last two chicken nuggets. Their steam filling the air. She eats and tosses the box into the sidewalk. The box’s crushed by a stumbling drunk. As the snowflakes begin to fall, I think of no place where I’d rather be as we sit arm-in-arm.

That Wendy’s burned down two-weeks later, and I transferred colleges at the end of the semester.
