Anyone else here who enjoy drinking whisky/whiskey? How long have you been drinking? And what's your favourite?

I started about a year ago with different types of bourbon, but I soon started to explore Irish whiskey and recently Scotch. My current favourite is Talisker 10yo. Haven't tried the 18yo yet, but I will as soon as I get the chanse.

>> No.4646351

Talisker is the only stuff I have at the moment and it's more of a winter whisky.

Indeed it's a pretty hot whisky. But I find myself enjoying it even though it's summer.

Don't have a favorite, but I'm currently on this and I find it to be pretty good.

If you like Ardbeg, try out Laphroaig. Both are Islay single malts, very peaty and very smoky. My two favorite scotches.

I've been drinking whisky for about 18 years. I drank blends when I was younger. I thought chivas and JW black were awesome.

I went though phases where I liked different styles and I don't really have a favorite. While I've cut back drastically on the hard liquor in recent years, I can see myself picking up a bottle of pic related if I was to buy a bottle for home. But I drink too much anyway so a bottle of whisky is the last thing I need at home.

Last whiskey I had was Widow Jane rye. It's from brooklyn so I wanted to hate it, but it was really good.

I would love to love whiskey. I like the flavors of bourbons, scotch's and all. But, I can't get over the raw alcohol burn. I'm basically limited to shots right now, and I get the delicious flavors for a brief second. I've tried sipping, but the fucking burn ruins everything. Will I ever get used to it? How?

I've had Laphroaig. I like them, but I still prefer a lot of the highlands stuff. Glemorangie is probably my favorite scotch all around. It's nice having a bottle of the Islay for when you just really want it, though. I was considering trying out Kilchoman for the next bottle.

1. Start with the tiniest possible sip, then take a slightly less tiny sip, then take bigger and bigger sips until the burn starts to bother you.

2. Drink older examples (most scotch gets pretty mellow around the 14 year mark) and watch the ABV (try not to go much over 40% until you're used to it, a glass of straight bookers will burn even a fairly jaded palate).

3. Consider adding some room temperature water. Ignore the fedoratards who will get mad at you for this.

4. Consider a cocktail such as a rob roy, rusty nail, old fashioned, or manhattan. Don't fall into the trap of using cheap stuff for cocktails, the difference is pretty obvious. You can experiment with much more potent tasting examples when they're in a cocktail and the strong flavors of the whisky can be enjoyed without the strong alcohol burn.

Poor grad student here. I really like whiskey and have been getting by on J&B. It's obviously pleb-tier scotch but its better than any other pleb-tier scotch. I also like Duggan's Dew from time to time if I'm trying to go for more alcohol per liter. As for bourbon or rye I haven't found anything affordable enough.

Any affordable (<$35/1.75 liter) but non-pleb whiskey I should know of?

Generally speaking good liquor doesn't come in 1.75 liter bottles. Look in the 750ml section.

There are tons of excellent bourbons for under $35/750ml. Basically do the hipster method: pick one that you have never seen an advertisement for, and give it a try. Eagle Rare and Evan Williams Single Barrel are both extremely common and pretty good. Most people agree that Knob Creek and Maker's Mark are a little overpriced and overpromoted. Woodford is somewhat more controversial but in my personal opinion it's garbage.

As for rye the pickings are going to be slim unless you have a good liquor store, but bulleit and michter's both make serviceable ryes in that price range.

Forget about scotch at those prices. Up to a few years ago you could get Lafroog 10 around $35 but either inflation, exchange rates, or demand have driven it into good scotch price territory and it's no longer the tremendous bargain it used to be. I guess you could call it the Tojiro DP of scotch. Overhyped and slightly overpriced, but still respectable.

Let it sit out for a little bit before you drink it. Some of the alcohol will evaporate, or so it seems. I'll admit, I'm no scientist.

Woodford Reserve has stuck with me. I generally prefer good bourbons and rye over scotch.

I love whisky. My favorite thing to do is to put sour gummy worms at the bottom of a glass, fill with ginger ale until the gummy worms are covered, then fill the rest of the glass with whiskey. I'm currently using Laphroaig and it's delicious.

I heard Japanese Whiskey is supposedly great.

I would into it more, but I cannot stand whiskey "culture" and the twats who don't stop talking about it. It enters my ear the same way the cries of girls who shriek about crantinis at a TGIFridays does.

Jap whisky is pretty much "meh" in my opinion .. also, stay the fuck out of whisky threads if you arent going to be cultured enough to want to discuss it - some of us dont mind spending over a hundred bucks on a bottle and want to have something to say about it

lafroog and hot sauce head detected. let me guess you think of whisky as proof of manliness and refuse to drink beer that clocks in under 150 IBU.

when you grow up you'll develop an interest in nuance, but for now enjoy FEELS AMAZING TO BE ME!!!! as it is in your early 20s

Try some of Edradour's various offerings. They do a lot of small-batch stuff with interesting cask choices. They may be hard to find unless you know of a scotch specialty shop.

Sunny D makes a great mixer, 50-50.

It's the yellow peril. As China has become wealthier, they've started to buy up all sorts of foreign luxuries. Much higher demand for scotch from China has caused the prices to rise drastically.
