hey /ck/ wandering over here from /an/ whats the limit on keeping uncleaned fish on ice? I was out till dark fishing last night and came home and threw the fish in the icebox. They arnt frozen, just chilled with ice and are getting cleaned in about 5 mins. whats the limit though? I wasnt really able to find a clear answer and it seems like there was a little bit of a difference of opinions on over ice, vs, fridge, ect. Ive done the same with some good size chain pickrel but wasnt sure.

thks

Do they smell bad at all? No? Then you're good. Fish is really good at letting you know when to throw it out.

yeah they smell like a fish smells... which.. i assume is ya know... pond water. BUT yeah no cloudy eyes or anything just slightly stiffer than when they first plopped out the water.

My biggest concern is once I started to do the research people were saying things like "blood spoiling" or "stomach flukes migrating" and... regardless they are cooked well over (fish tacos mmmm) but still the same.. just not super clear info on it.

As long as the bowels didn't rupture and get all over the meat, and that it was chilled the whole time instead of left out in the sun, I would assume it's safe.

That being said, I'm no expert.

There are now parasites through the entire fish that can't be killed with heat.

Dispose of the icebox incl the fish. Do not attempt to open it. Ducktape it shut and bury it.

you're fine OP, no worries. A day in ice before filleting even ungutted won't hurt anything.

so far If i find any parasites I just pull em out and scan the meat. I def see nematodes from time to time... its part of the meat and fishing. Getting fried up for fishtacos will take care of anything left lol
