Dear /ck/,

A friend of mine brought this back as a gift for me from China. I have no idea what it is though, and neither does he. It kind of smells like kerosene though, and the liquid is clear.

What is it /ck/? I cannot decipher the moonspeak on the bottle. Is it lighter fuel? Rat poison? Will I go blind from it? Any help is appreciated.

That is called Bai Jou, or white liquor

it is all fucking disgusting, and is mainly drank as a competition

Op here. Thanks for helping me out so far. I have to admit I was also quite irritated by the words "on - off" on the cap.

>> No.4480259

neat bottle, but like >>4480219 said, it's most likely baiju. God awful stuff.

>> No.4480264

Op here. That's what it smells like, awful. And knowing my friend, this was probably the cheapest he could find, so I'm really sceptical to try it.

neat bottle i wouldnt eat or drink from it though if it smells like kerosene.

DAT, mah nigguh, is baiju. I'm not sure of the brand though. The finest brand is Mao Tai. My fiance's dad gave me a 25 year old bottleof the stuff. However...i fucking hate the taste. Even the most expensive baiju tastes like nasty ass liquorice. Save it. Sell it. Keep it as an antique. But drinking? Heeell naw. Crack open a nice American bourbon.

I wouldn't say it's all disgusting. The cheap ones taste like fucking Red Bull but boy oh boy does MaoTai taste good.

Baijiu is the worst thing, alcoholic or otherwise, that I've ever tasted in my life. It is simply evil. And I don't mean this in the cliche "durr durr tequila makes me crazy" fashion that novice drinkers mean. I'm an alcoholic and I know how ethanol works. I would never touch that stuff except as a sick joke. Just thinking about it made me feel ill for months afterwards. I didn't even drink enough to get drunk because I immediately felt like I had been poisoned when I drank a few sips. Take a taste and you will understand what I mean. Nixon's handlers warned him not to go near the stuff.

This is what's written on the bottle.

牛栏山酒厂
Even the expensive stuff is horrible and that bottle looks kind of fancy. Maybe your friend got you expensive stuff. Here's the page for the stuff you got, but the price just says ***.

Thanks for finding it! It's a shame about the price though. Can you translate the moonspeak on the bottle?

>> No.4481346

I live in China at the moment, this is definitely Baijiu, and one of the more horrible brands at that. There definitely are some nice brands of Baijiu, this is not one of them!

The text on the bottle translates roughly to:

Old Chinese Style
Beijing Shunxin Agriculture Company Ltd.
Niulanshan Distillery

The brand is commonly referred to as Niulanshan, which is basically just a name but i guess at a stretch it would translate as Cattle Field Hill

Enjoy your hideous gift

oh, forgot about the price
I'd say you could probably pick that bottle up, in my city at least, for around $2-3.

Although to be fair I can't remember how much that brand would be off the top of my head, going by the price of their little 100ml bottles.

Why do they like baijiu so much? Are they too hard for softer drinks under 60%ABV?

>> No.4481407

All of you are fucking stupid in this thread.

The liquor in question is the type of white rice liquor that made to sting.
It's suppose to smell like kerosene because that's the flavour they are going for. And if you taste it you'll feel a burning sensation on your tongue and esophagus.

It's VERY strong, because you suppose to drink it while you are eating very rich foods, such as fatty BBQ, spicy food, or fish.

Think of it as the Chinese version of moonshine.

>> No.4481408

>>4481392
Umm, you did specify "tolerable", right?

You may need to distinguish that further, like do you mean "survivable" or do you mean "good"?

Or did you misspell "toluene"??

>not liking the taste of kerosene = being stupid

Drinking kerosene is extremely bad. I've had American, Cuban, Mexican, and Indonesian moonshine and none of them tasted remotely as vile as the Chinese stuff. Why so butthurt? U chinky dink? Ping pong wing wong ding dong? Or just 2PC4me?

All the other moonshines I tasted were basically very shitty alcohol with a funky "off" taste, except for the American stuff which was surprisingly good.

The baijiu I had, which didn't even come in a dirty empty plastic coca cola bottle like the others, didn't even taste like liquor. It tasted like poison. The only reason I didn't call the hospital after swallowing it was the reassuring mass produced label which assured me that if I were to die, others would too.

Anyone seriously comparing this stuff to "shitty liquor" either hasn't tasted it or is probably Chinese.

Obviously you don't talk to actual people in real life so I googled it for you:

see that dot cn in the domain?

>Though experts can tell the subtle differences between the various types, brands and flavors of baijiu, most foreigners find the drink difficult to enjoy at best and revolting at worst.

Now you know even real Chinese people (not fake Australian born Chinese) say foreigners find it revolting. Good luck with your white knight campaign, though.
