Pic related.

I moved down south recently and a lot of gas stations have a giant pot of these things and what you do is take a giant spoon a fill up a plastic cup..large or small. Theyre ok, but nothing to brag about. I'm not even sure how youre supposed to eat these things.

You don't know how to eat peanuts?

>> No.4437151

I've never had boiled peanuts. I don't get the allure, they're fine as is.

Fried maybe...

>> No.4437154

on the contrary, when I went down south, I never thought these would be good (especially from gas stations).

But dem cajun seasonings, holy shit, delicious

I've loved 'em since I was a kid. Thankfully, they were what got me to eat beans because my parents told me they were so similar.

>> No.4437175

OP here..do you eat the shell? When I crack one open its just mush inside, it wont even fall out. Maybe they boiled them too long..

>> No.4437208

>>4437175
boiled peanut shells actually get tougher, can't really eat em. If they're mush they probably were boiled too long.

I much prefer roasted salted peanuts, I do eat those with the shells.

>> No.4437506

Pho is overrated, tastes like dishwater.

I crack mine open with my mouth at the hardest part, and then suck the peanut out. Requires a little finesse, like cracking open sunflower seeds, but once you get the hang of it.

>> No.4437523

boiled peanuts are great, but the stuff you get from gas stations ranges from terrible to very good

if you got them from a gas station one time, and they were ass, don't assume they're all that bad

>>4437154
this. never get the plain ones. get the ones that look like they're being boiled in straight fuckin hot sauce.

>> No.4437582

Fuck yes.
These are by far my favorite food, ever. Gas stations, not the ones run by methmouth ridden inbreds, are by far the best for them. My parents aren't southern, but I was raised in the south. I remember being forbidden to buy these because they thought they were disgusting, once I could develop my own opinion on them, I went hard. It got to the point were I'd eat a 44oz cup for dinner/lunch everyday. Cajun seasoning forever.

It sounds more like you have a cilantro aversion, than you got bad pho.

I grew up and still live in the South. I lived with my grandparents for the first 12 years of my life (Mom was suffering from PPD). Gams would take me to drive-in burger joints/dairy bars and we'd go as a family to cook-outs (fish fries, seafood boils and gumbos, mostly), but other than that, we ate all our meals at home. Paps would roast 10 lbs. of peanuts every month and put them in a paper sack by the back door. Meals were fairly laborious and time-consuming, so if you got hungry, you'd snack on some peanuts and a Coke (we always had crates upon crates of Coke stacked almost halfway up the height of the door, past the doorknob). Of course, he'd always save a few pounds and boil them. When we'd get to the bottom of a bag of peanuts, we'd "pan for Gold" (as he put it) and sort out all the nuts that came loose. He never measured anything, and I don't know how he did it so accurately, but he'd make peanut brittle out of them in a 5-6" cast iron skillet on the stove. We'd line an old tin can with wax paper, break them into pieces, and pour them in. I built my fondest memories around food. RIP.

Wtf. That looks like the ashtray on top of garbage cans after it rains. Why would you eat that?

All carbonated beverages are "coke". In some places, if you order a coke they will ask you what kind. That being said, Mountain Dew is the stereotypical drink of choice. However, I've seen plenty of Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper. Mellow Yellow, and Sprite being consumed.

The most heavily consumed drink in restaurants by far is sweet tea, which is iced and sweetened black tea.

As with anything, there will be those who abuse it, but not us. We had so much because it went on sale often, and cook-outs were frequent enough to warrant it. There were other refreshments, but with 30+ people attending, there's going to be quite a few who want to grab a cold can from a bucket of ice.

>> No.4437936

>>4437928
Some people will ask if you want a "coke" and ask what kind, but I specifically capitalized it. Just making that clear. What you wrote is still accurate, though.

Boiled P-nuts are the best fucking snack ever, but gas station boiled p-nuts are usually absolute shite, since they've been seriously overcooked and usually aren't even done right to begin with.

These fuckers are dead simple to make. Get some raw in-shell peanuts (NOT ROASTED), wash the fuckers, and then put them in a big stock pot with 1/2 cup of salt and boil the fuckers for 6-8 hours for optimum fucking yum. If you're into it, you can add Cajun seasoning or a bottle of hot sauce or something, I prefer just the plain salted kind.

I live in North Carolina and I've never once heard anyone refer to a soda as a Coke if it wasn't an actual Coca-cola. I'm convinced that's just a weird stereotype (or at least only centralized in large hillbilly communities)

Where I live they're called soft drinks, and in my family you have to specify the "soft" because if you just say "I'm getting a drink" it automatically means alcohol.

>> No.4438059

South Carolina it's all just 'coke.' Used to be same up here in Kentucky where I moved to, but it's changed in the last ten years or so to 'soda' or 'soft drink.'

Pho is overrated. The broth is good, but the meat is always shit and the other ingredients do little but add a little more texture.

Siracha is overrated hot sauce. It's decent, but not anywhere close to the hipster butt love it gets here.

Beer with high hoppy flavor. In small quantities it's tolerable, but it overwhelms the pallet and is not at all refreshing or "complex".

Crawfish also kinda sucks. I have had it in high end Argentinian food, I have had it in the south at a boil. It just reminds me of overcooked shrimp or less flavorful, dirt tasting frozen langoustine.
