Can we talk about restaurants in your country?

I recently moved to Japan, and it's surreal going out to eat. There are certain things that are so basic to western cuisine that they just fuck up royally. But then there are some dishes I can't even begin to copy, which they churn out for cheap.

>pasta is literal shit
>burgers literal shit
>sushi is "as expected" not as much variety
>grill-your-own-meat is fucking awesome
>stuff in a bowl with rice is fucking awesome

Seriously, if you come to Japan, I highly recommend "stuff in a bowl with rice." Stuff ranges from curry, to thin slices of pork, to fried chicken with mayo, to chopped tuna.

Ausfag here.

I can't speak on behalf of all of my country as it's so fucking big, but my city at least (Adelaide, South Australia) has a tendency to become obsessed with a certain type of food, and next thing you know within a month there's that type of food/theme everywhere.

The most recent craze has been burgers. About 5 or 6ish (from what I know of) new places have opened up that all call themselves burger joints.

Before this it was dessert bars. One really good one opened up in a suburb, and sure enough, dessert bars are popping up everywhere.

In terms of restaurants in general, all restaurants (unless they're Asian) will give you free sliced bread/bread rolls with butter and free water before you eat. I've gone interstate to Melbourne and every restaurant I've gone to won't do this unless you request it, and it goes on your tab in the end. To be fair though, Adelaide water is notoriously horrible, but I've gotten used to it.

Can't think of anything else other than Aussies don't tip unless they really like the restaurant. We get paid pretty well as is.

New Zealandfag here. As far as I've ever known we don't really have many notable restaurants around here, and NZers aren't really the type of fancy wine and dining people anyway.
If you do come here though you need to:

1. Go to a Hells Pizza joint (A national chain thats being hanging around and pissing off christians since the late nineties, I'm pretty sure that they've started stores up in Australia and Canada now)

2. Get some fush and chups, though it's hard to tell which ones are good when you're in a suburban area
(they're mostly filled with chinese stores that are pretty average in quality and super oily with some exceptions, or proper restaurants that charge you an arm and a leg like they do in Australia).
In my experience the best ones are out in the tiny countryside towns by the ocean that you go past while traveling around (Best place I've ever been to was near a little town on the east coast in the South Island called Kakanui).

3. For ultimate NZ cuisine experience, eat your fish and chips and pizza on a abandoned swingset at a sunny beach in the middle of nowhere, while spilling crumb batter and tomato sauce all over your self, throwing your violently at the hoard of about fifty seagulls crowding you, and then swearing at them from your car as they started ripping all of your rubbish out of the bin you chucked it in and tearing it apart: Or eat it on the back of a truck with beer.

Feels good man.

Australian living in Japan here.
While the family restaurant burgers are generally poop the burger king burgers are great, I had an avocado whopper the other day and I just didn't want it to end.

I could quite happily live my life without ever eating a burger from the australian version of BK (hungry jacks) but damn, this shit's on another level compared to the toilet meat they serve back home.

As for sushi variety it depends where you go, I've been to several sushi trains in Hokkaido and I ate crustaceans I didn't even knew existed.
Sushi ain't that great in the rest of japan though, I can give you that.

I agree with everything else.

Denver, Colorado reporting in.
There's some pretty good tex-mex restaurants here, such as Santiago's and Emilios.
Used to be a good chinese place by 1st and havana that closed down, sucks because all the other places are pretty mediocre.
There's also some Thai restaurants that are good.
And then there's generic shitty fast food.

Random restaurants in my city: mostly defrost industrial dishes, high priced and brought by unfriendly waiters.

Never randomly try a random restaurant in Paris, and I don't even know if those from guides are descent.

Phoenix AZ

Because there's a lot of college kids around you get your typical shitty chain restaurants and the occasional small pizza joint, but there is actually a very good Asian and Indian food scene to be had, with plenty of good Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, ect. There's also a growing population of Greek restaurants as well, I had a fantastic gyro with artichoke hearts and a feta tzatziki at a cafe the other day.

The Mexican food is needless to say very authentic as well if you know where to go.

Kansas City reporting. There's some okay places around if you know where to look. Notably a decent Thai place for pretty cheap and this meat market that sells street tacos for 2 bucks on saturdays. I end up in Lawrence a lot as well, sine I have a friend going to college out there. She has a chinese place she always orders from, and there's a greek place with the best hummus I've tasted in a while. Last time we went to the bar out there, we stopped at Pyramid Pizza after. BEST FUCKING PIZZA EVER. The crust where the toppings were was thing and didnt have too much sauce, but the edge crust was really thick and chewy, with garlic butter on it. I've been itching to go pick her up just to get some damn pizza.
