Hi, /ck/. Seeking advice.

I'm going to be baking a chocolate cake for a friend's birthday - nothing fancy, just a bog-standard sponge cake recipe with a little cocoa powder added for flavour.

Ordinarily I'd melt down a bar of plain chocolate, stir in some double cream and use this as both the icing and the filling. Trouble is, using ganache makes the cake difficult to eat using your hands - always ends up being better served in a bowl, and I'd rather avoid it this time around.

tl;dr - suggestions for making an ordinary chocolate cake a little more exciting? Difficulty - finger-friendly.

Chocolate shavings, dusting of powdered sugar. Don't do the choc shavings when the cake is still warm though. Maybe a thin layer of ganache just at the top to help the shavings stick better.

That's a fantastic idea, thanks anon.

I work in an office; know how everyone has 'their own mug' and woe betide anyone who dared use 'their mug'?

It's easier having a 'cut your own slice' thing, believe me.

what, is your office too poor for a box of plastic forks?

>oh man we could really use some plastic forks

Then there's the issue of how, if you're having to eat using a fork, there has to be a -reason- for eating with a fork. Cake with ganache & cream = delicious but oozy.

Finger food is less hassle, is all.

the reason for eating with a fork is your stupid cake. bring some god damned plastic forks in with the cake, this is a complete non-issue.

If you still want to go with the ganache, you could have napkins and put the slice of cake on the napkin...

I recently made a cake that I flooded with liquid fondant. It was fun, and, incidentally, it was fairly easy to pick up and eat.
