Hey /ck/ I'm moving out in about a month's time.

Could you guys recommend a cook book or two for someone who is very very new to cooking?

I personally suggest watching videos and reading blogs. Look up Foodwishes (YouTube) and Pioneer Woman (blog).

There are probably better blogs, but she cooks comfort food that's accessible to inexperienced cooks. As a beginner, I think you should cook food that has a huge reward at minimal cost. Fucking up a prime rib because you want to be posh is stupid. Try making some potato skins instead.

She'll show you how to make your own food, but will take some shortcuts to make it easier. An example might be frying chicken for chicken parmesan, but then using a jar of marinara in place of homemade. I think it's a decent compromise, and it makes learning to cook food a lot less hectic. Then you can graduate to making your own sauces.

But definitely don't cook or eat like that forever.

not quite any cookbook, but almost any cookbook.

avoid anything cuisine-specific. or with a lot of color photographs. those are sometimes 100% semi-advanced+ dishes with expensive/obscure ingredients.

Download the entire series of 'Good Eats'.

Or you could download both his cooking and baking books and just watch the entire series on youtube...

Are you looking for any type of cooking in particular? I assume you're from somewhere in the West?
