I've been to Japan a few times. The only overtly racist thing I saw were black vans with loudspeakers on top driving around Tokyo spouting rhetoric about "Japan for the Japanese" - generic anti-foreigner stuff. It's all in Japanese, so if you don't speak you wouldn't even notice.

Beyond that the only "racism" I experienced was a wary eye cast upon the barbarian foreigner to make sure I showered before getting into the ofuro and took my shoes off before entering the ryokan (in the country) or the tatami area of the bar (in the city). I'd watched enough cartoons to know about things like the toilet slippers.

But there was no chance of negotiating a kaiseki meal correctly, and no one expected me to. Thankfully I didn't need a fork!

For the most part in Japan I've been treated like a welcome but retarded guest. It's like they're happy to have me, but afraid I'll fuck things up, because I'm not properly cultured in their view. I don't mind that, because I find that incredibly reserved, quiet consternation amusing.

now as I learned from studying babies, the reason white people think all asians look alike is because they are not generally exposed to many different asian faces as infants (an infant can detect differences in faces of any species and over time will lose that ability if it is not honed) so a baby being around only white people will only really detect differences in white faces.

Well, the snacks are just the tip of the iceberg as far as the food goes. Yes, the trashy food is good in Japan. I indulge every time I'm there. But the finer end of the food is spectacular, if outrageously expensive. If you ever make it over there set aside a substantial pile of cash for eating at places where you don't just pay at a machine in the front of the joint. Better if you get taken out to those places, but you can't always count on it.

The only way I've made it over is by being a musician. Some of the bands I've played with have played there. Japanese audiences are great - they actually listen, then go nuts at the end of each song. And a gig or two in Japan covers the travel cost of shows in Australia, so it becomes a two birds one stone thing. Australia is a good place to eat as well, especially for seafood.

Tonkatsu is the fucking shit! My parents used to live in tokyo before I was born, but we went back to visit family friends when I was 14. I remember one night going to Tonky's in town and falling in love. I've never found a Japanese restaurant in the whole of London that makes it as good as they do in Tokyo.
