>umami

If any of you faggots use this term of foodie commercialization and "alternative culinary" fad, I'll be serving your testicles as pate.

The term's savory, it's always been savory, and the only reason it's been changed from savory to fucking umami is to market on it.

Just sayin.

Steak is savory but not umami. A whole bunch of other savory foods are also not umami. Explain.

>> No.4371881

>>4371877

Your statement is incorrect, that's all the explanation needed. Savory and Umami mean the exact same thing. One word is English, the other is Japanese. The meanings are the same. A steak is both umami and savory because the words mean the same thing.

>> No.4371896

>>4371881

No, that's like saying umami and meaty mean the same thing. They are similar but clearly we would not need to say umami if savory was sufficient.

Please rage more about kawaii and chopsticks though, anon-kun ;)

>Umami /uːˈmɑːmi/, a savory taste,[1][2][3] is one of the five basic tastes, together with sweet, sour, bitter and salty. A loanword from the Japanese (うま味?), umami can be translated "pleasant savory taste".[4] This particular writing was chosen by Professor Kikunae Ikeda from umai (うまい) "delicious" and mi (味) "taste". The kanji 旨味 are used for a more general meaning to describe a food as delicious.

Definition of UMAMI
: a taste sensation that is meaty or savory and is produced by several amino acids and nucleotides (as glutamate and aspartate)
Origin of UMAMI
Japanese, savoriness, flavor
First Known Use: 1979

>he only reason it's been changed from savory to fucking umami is to market on it.

except it was the japanese who a) considered it to be a basic taste and b) proved this scientifically

yes our word for it is savoury, but historically we have never considered it a basic taste.

I like to use dried morel mushrooms for extra umami in my dishes. I also cook sliced mushrooms in single layers on both sides to increase their umami. Then I feed them to your mommy and she offers up her poonani.

No amount of /a/ butthurt will change the fact that umami is now a mainstream part of English and "savoury" (sic) is regarded as being merely roughly similar, at best.

Go start a thread about how French food is pretentious now that you've been soundly defeated.

Umami is the scientific word for it, you faggot. It's a type of taste your tongue can detect.
It was discovered by a Japanese scientist and that's what it's now called. I've heard of it way before it apparently became a "marketed fad."

Savory is different because most wouldn't describe a tomato as "savory." But it does indeed have a umami taste.
