Why does Spam get such a bad reputation in the United States?

The people I lived with briefly cringed when I brought a tin of Spam in to their home. But I don't see anything wrong with it; it's cheap, relatively healthy (the preservative in it is naturally made in the human body) and it tastes just fine when spread on toast. Why do they hate it?

For the same reason junk mail was referred to as spam. Back in the day, you're all excite that your inbox has (8) new messages, then "Awwwwe fuck man, all I got was spam".

Imagine you're hungry, you go to the cupboard and "Awwwwe fuck man, all I got is spam".

I've have a can of that shit sitting in my cupboard for 2 years now. It is as pervasive as junk mail.
