I ate there for the first time last October, never had Chicago Deep-Dish pizza before, and the locals said it was a great place to eat.

I was surprised, I really enjoyed it. It's not my favorite style of pizza, and I'll stick with the more traditional way, but deep-dish isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

Every Christmas my dad sends me one of their 'Taste Of Chicago' packs (this year it was a Deepdish and some Ribs, last year, Deepdish and a Cheesecake)

It comes completely frozen in a container with a big chunk of dry ice, then you plunk it right into your freezer until you're ready to eat. When you're ready you can cook the pie right in the container it came in (after removing the plastic wrap and paper top). My advice would be to put the pie in the oven while the oven is preheating - it helps to make sure the middle gets completely warmed through before the edges burn.

It's pretty damn good for frozen 'pizza' (Chicago Deepdish is a pizza-style pie, technically). I always look forward to it, and I've actually thought about ordering some for myself just for the hell of it, but I never did because I'm cheap.

I would imagine that eating it freshly made is probably 5 times better, but unless you live near (or visit the area near) one of their restaurants, this is the best you can do.

Only the tourist places in Philadelphia make bad ones. They have to cater to midwesterners and their awful Velveeta/Cheez Whiz tastes. Any cornerstore, variety, bodega or hole-in-the-wall will have a good cheesesteak anywhere from the mid-atlantic/northern Piedmont to New England.

The original cheese was provolone (since... you know... Whiz didn't even exist yet). Fun fact: the Whiz cheesesteak originated in Michigan, near Detroit. As usual, an Arab was responsible for destroying an American institution.

that sir, is not a pizza.

Pizza is typically flat, and greasy on the bottom and exciting at first, then progressively more dissapointing as you eat it. Pizza is the thing you buy because you have no better excuse, or you bought it because none of your friends can agree on anything.

Pizza is a staple of the unwashed, uncivilized, unsophisticated and unhappy. It is more a means to an end than it is something to be enjoyed for its own qualities.

You have not posted a picture of a pizza, OP, you have posted a picture of a Pie. Pies are meant to serve a more noble purpose. They are meant to sustain us and satisfy us in ways that no other dish can. They are works of art, creations the be admired and respected. a pizza is something you settle for, a Pie is something you earn. A pie inspires enthusiasm and rewards success both in life and in the kitchen.

That sir, is no trifling little pizza. That is a Pie. Be proud of that.
